There are several companies that offer products that will sterilize water by shining ultraviolet light on it, in a jug or through a clear portion of the water supply of the house. Are there any dangers associated with this? The point of this is that UV is ionizing, and will disrupt and kill microorganisms. I wonder about increased corrosion of water pipes due to all the radicals coming out of such a unit.
On a slightly related note, does using a UV light in a refrigerator further retard growth? I prefer to buy cheeses in large blocks, but as soon as a package is opened, it starts growing fuzz within a day or two no matter how well-wrapped it is. If a black light reacts unfavorably with food or with packaging, it would be a bad idea.
