Uvalde, Texas school shooting - the political thread

Yeah, it’s all about “well it’s not the guns, but whatever’s the solution it must NOT include us spending one cent on managing the root problems”.

People need to understand, that a twisted motivation is still motivation. We may want to believe all of his kind are feckless basement dwellers but this guy seemingly worked and saved to get the funds.

Now sure, some may point out that he could have comparably armed himself for about half as much, but hey, part of his twistedness obviously was that he did not want to flame out with cheapo gear. Go figure.

Oh yeah, almost forgot:

What mental institutions? Oh wait, don’t tell me Eric has just joined three other losers and incorporated American Bedlam Industries, for-profit mental institution chain…

ISTM this would be one of those where the more hardcore 2A geekboys may look at him kind of sideways , as with bump stocks and “take their guns first give them due process later” red flags. Dude is not sincerely one of you, fellows…

Never mind

What do you mean? They may not but phyiscal checks, but a checking account is pretty much essential in order to have a debit account. Honestly, most 10 year olds i know have some sort of kiddie checking account with their own debit card.

It has been reported that the gunman worked at Wendy’s and saved up $4000 for his weapons purchases. It would be fairly common for him to have a checking account, he may even have opened one for direct deposit of his paychecks if that’s an option at Wendy’s. He also may have had no clue how to write out a check, another disappearing skill.

I rather imagine Wendy’s requires direct deposit, and pays you on a cash card if you refuse.

I see the day coming where you can’t tell the difference between a prison and a school from the outside.

It’s already here. The architects of a high school one town over are also the architects of several local prisons.

It shows.

Don’t be silly, obviously the machine gun turrets will be pointed inward on one, and outward on the other.

(And of course when a breach of the perimeter occurs, it’s the reverse.)

I am so glad I didn’t have kids, and that my husband is retired from teaching now. What a hellscape.

So once they’ve hardened the building with one entrance, the lunatics with guns will attack the kids lining up to enter, so we’ll bus them inside the compound. The the lunatics with guns will attack the buses, so we’d armor the buses, so then the lunatics with guns will attack the bus stops. Plus there are thousands of other gun deaths.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to admit that the easy access to guns is the problem?

Again and again, when faced with difficult problems, conservatives just make it illegal to talk about the problem. They are doing now with CRT, many Republican governors forbade state agencies from using the term climate change and the Dickey Amendment tried to make illegal for the US government to research gun violence.

Politically:

The US Congress is dedicated to to maintaining a multibillion dollar domestic weapons market. No meaningful gun legislation has ever been proposed, let alone passed.

State political structures are dedicated to the preservation of their party organizations. School shootings are rarer than lightning strikes so only warrant superficial rhetoric. Currently illustrated by Greg Abbot.

Local politicians do what is easy and pisses off the least number of people. School protection is just eye wash. In fact all defense projects that succeed are a dead end “We spent all that money and nothing ever happened”.

I used to be a cynic but US culture caught up.

What may happen is that a major state like California or New York will pass and enact sweeping legislation and ignore any SCOTUS rulings. If some other states follow suit the Congress will have to act.

The problem with that is that Federal law and SCOTUS decisions almost always take precedence over state laws (there is probably some odd exception but I can’t think of it at the moment). Flagrantly ignoring a SCOTUS decision at the state court level is actually tantamount to seceding from the Union (in a legal sense, obviously not in the comprehensive practical and logistical sense of declaring an independent sovereign nation). In that case the President would be justified in declaring martial law, removing the governor and legislature, and reconstituting the state government to be compliant with the Constitution. Frankly, I can’t see that happening even in the current polarized state of affairs.

Stranger

It would indeed be an interesting confrontation. I assume the large states are looking seriously at the current power challenge by minority states. I don’t believe they will continue to tolerate being jerked around.

Some states might operate like Taiwan. Still part of the US but politically separate.

At least they’d have the best pillows.

Was “Arkham Asylums” taken?

I think 2nd amendment fanatics are worried about the wrong people who will take their guns. When they get the fascist government they want, it is NOT going to be happy with armed citizens. Sure, maybe it will start with disarming liberals and people of color and MAGA will be fine with that. But then the fascists will turn on them and that “tyranny” they are so eager to fight will crush them. At least we’ll finally get safe schools, what’s left of them.

Just ban schools from teaching the Night of the Long Knives. Problem solved!

That only happens to people who aren’t Real Americans. You’re a Real American, right? Then sign this Citizen’s NDA. It will help you stay patriotic in word and deed!
