Uvalde, Texas school shooting - the political thread

This seems a far more likely possibility.

The other thing that’s not peculiar to any culture is the common sense politics of deposing someone powerful. It’s analogous to the Putin situation, for example. Until you’re sure he’s going down, acting against him puts you at great personal risk if he survives and maintains power. That consideration may also be part of what’s going on with the school board’s reluctance to act. It’s safer to just stay neutral and wait for the official investigations to give a clear direction and consensus that he must go.

You may conclude whatever you wish.

Correct–I did. Your permission is not required (nor is there a reason for you to waste board space discussing it) for me to conclude you are peddling nonsense conspiracies.

Do you live in New Mexico or Texas?

If not you may find our politics difficult to understand.

In any case let’s see how it unfolds.

You have made a specific claim that school boards are “controlled” by a single family, with no substantiation. These claims can be regarded as false or even fiction, there isn’t anything more to say on the matter. You’re peddling nonsense.

We’ve drifted off topic, I will sort this out shortly.

Please drop the hijack of schoolboard control projections base on a town in another state that isn’t named. No warnings issues, but enough.

There’s another incident here where some cops in Arizona would not go into a lake to attempt to save a drowning man.

The headline alone doesn’t really paint the picture, though. Cops had been called because of a dispute between him an his wife at 5am. So he’s almost certainly been drinking. After chatting to him the cops tell him he’s free to go, so he wasn’t running from them. He just decides to swim into the lake of his own volition and then declares he’s drowning. Unless one of the cops had expert life saving skills, I think it’s asking a bit much to say it’s their duty to go in after this fool.

I tend to agree, but then I also think that lifeguard training probably wouldn’t be that crazy for cops to get. They already get CPR training, don’t they? If not they should.

That said, how do you just watch someone die you could have helped and then live with yourself? I’m reminded of James Gandolfini’s monologue in True Romance, where he talks about watching someone’s eyes as they die. The first time was tough to get over, but now he does it just to watch the expression change. Maybe those cops sleep just fine because they were just watching the expression change.

This thread was started with no clear topic in mind beyond being “political”. For that reason, I tried to handle it gently and let people blow off their anger, deliberately interpreting “political” commentary in as generous a way as possible.

Now I think the thread has played itself out, since all that is left are the hijacks. As such, I’m closing it.

If any of you wish to craft new political discussions around this event, that’s fine, but the thread objective should be clearly defined from the start. Thanks.
