Uverse -- why can't you move a long distance and still have your recorded TV shows?

The thread on Tivo and subscriptions got me to thinking once again about something that’s long confused me.

The ads for AT&T Uverse make a point of saying that if you move locally you take your recorded shows with you. But why should the distance you move matter? Isn’t the content resident on your DVR? I can see that since the equipment is Uverse equipment it may not work if you don’t have the Uverse service, but why would stuff recorded in New York not be there after you’ve moved to LA and got your Uverse service going at your new home?

Related question – we have 2 seasons of *Masters of Sex *recorded that we haven’t gotten around to watching yet. If we were to decide to no longer get Showtime, would we still be able to watch the show?
