Every year, we visit Mrs. KVS’ parents in Pittsburgh for a week in August. While we are there, we usually take a 3 or 4 day trip. What I need are some suggestions about places to go within a 4 or 5 hour drive radius of Pittsburgh. The kids (girls) are 7 1/2, 10, and 11 1/2. The trip will ultimately be for them, so we don’t care if the destination appeals more to kids than adults. There are some restrictions:
- Nothing on the east coast - we live in Baltimore, so we’ve already done DC, NYC, Philidelphia, Williamsburg, etc.
- No Niagra Falls - been there, done that (several times).
- Hi Opal!
- At this point, we’re leery about Toronto and vicinity.
- Already done Cleveland as well.
- I know that someone is thinking Cedar Point. We went two years ago, and my kids are not big on roller coasters.
So, any suggestions?
Pittsburgh has a good natural history museum. Other museums are the Heinz Local History Museum, and the Andy Warhol museum. They could go downtown and ride one of the inclines up to Mount Washington, which overlooks the city. Nice at night after visiting a pricey restaurant up there. Monterrey Bay or LeMont are good. There are casinos about 1 hour away in Wheeling, WV. Rafting trips are available in Ohiopyle, PA, about 1 hour away. There are also canoe rental trips in on the Clarion river, about 1-1/2 hours away. The Frank Lloyd Wright house, Falling Water, is about an hour away in Mill Run, PA. Pittsburgh has an average zoo. There is also a water park called Sandcastle, and an old time amusement park called Kennywood.
If your kids like LEGO:LEGOland - Windsor.
There is also a good conservatory (Phipps) and an aviary in Pittsburgh.
