In December I’m going to St Kitts, where I’m furthering my goal of playing in every ocean & sea in the world. Two questions: Anyone have any hints for fun things to do there?
And also: My atlas shows the Carribean Sea on one side of the Lesser Antilles chain, & the Atlantic on the other. Where is the boundary? Can I straddle the two, with my butt in the Atlantic & my torso in the Carribean?
Try http://www.nevis1.com This site has been put together by, well, I guess I wouldn’t call him a friend, but someone who drinks at the same bar I do. Actually he’s a bit of a twit, but he seems pretty knowledgeable about Nevis/St. Kitts. Have a nice trip.
We were in St. Kitts a few years ago. Great people, but not much going on there. There are two plantations with wonderful restaurants…be sure to hit both. In the main city (Basseterre?) there’s a great restaurant owned by an English (I believe) woman which I also believe is called Mango…another memorable meal. Besides these restaurants, be sure to hit the local places…we had a great meal in a hole in the wall joint also in Basseterre. We stayed in the Ocean Terrace Inn, which has a nice outdoor bar, and very good restaurant.
As for beaches, you have to drive to them…I don’t think any hotels are on the beach (my biggest dislike about the island). Turtle Beach (again, reaching into the depths of my memory) was a nice sandy beach at the end of the island, right across from Nevis…great beachfront restaurant and bar, complete with a monkey.
I’ve had friends that have visited Nevis and they loved it. There are boats that will take you back and forth between the two.
Oh…and most of all…the best drink in the world is found only in St. Kitts. It’s a a CSR (kinda like rum) and Ting (Grapefruit soda). Refreshing, potent, and mighty swell when sipped in an in-pool bar.
Have fun! Let me know if you have any other questions.
One question…is there any point in renting a car, or will mopeds/motorcycles suffice? We’re going to be on St Kitts, this is courtesy of my SO who is an MD & finds these really cool courses to go to, all expenses paid. But they usually allow for lots of time off, & we have a couple of days completely free…any interesting hiking to be done?
The truth? From a well-traveled girl.
Be prepared to not be overly stimulated.
If you like beaches and camping, or boating etc. all small islands are great.
If you like nightlife, they are all pain. And St.Kitts is smaller and slower than most.
I don’t remember seeing a whole lot of mopeds/scooters for rent or being ridden around. This may have changed. We rented a Suzuki Samurai from a local Avis…80,000 miles and beat to hell. Kind of added to the overall experience, since driving is done on the left and the controls were opposite.
You’ll definitely want some sort of rental for your stay. Everything you’ll want is somewhere else that you’ll need to drive to, especially the beaches.
As for hiking, there’s plenty to be found. There’s a rainforest as well as a preserve of some sort (where all the monkeys are) down by the beach across from Nevis. One of the Plantations had a nature walk that was short, but nice, especially before brunch.
There is a beach called “Turtle Beach” about 1/2 hour from Basterre (sp?). An absolutely beautiful drive as well, right over the mountains. The beach has a small cafe and was almost deserted when my wife and I were there a year ago. Just beautful with monkeys running around. I have a couple pictures I can scan for you if you like.
Oooh, bernse. Monkeys…deserted…ooh lala! I’m there, thanks for the tip. We’re staying at the Four Seasons
(medical conference), so alot of the food is included.
But I’ll definitely bring bananas and monkey nuts.
I’m pretty sure the Four Seasons is on Nevis. I had a friend who played golf there…the monkeys would come out and grab the balls, trading them back for bananas!
