Vacations and climatizing to the temperature

Here in the south (US) we’re in the midst of an unseasonably cold “arctic blast.” So much so that the raindrops school system delayed the beginning of the school day by two hours this morning. How cold you ask? Overnight lows around 10-11 F.

Now I know you dopers from northern climes will scoff at such, but remember this is the south. Please reference the documentary “Mississippi Burning” and notice the sheen of sweat that is considered part of our everyday attire down here for most of the year.

Anyway, we all know that a temperature sift of 20+ degrees in either direction in a short time span felts uncomfortable. Those first really cold or really warm days are miserable. So it crosses my mind to ask; when people from normally really cold areas go on vacation to somewhere tropical, does it make for a miserable trip?

If I’m coming from bitter cold to a really humid climate, it’s awful. A dry heat is easier to get used to.

It never bothered me going from a very cold climate to a hot climate. I’m from Michigan and I’ve done winter vacations in Florida many times. I love it when that first wave of heat and humidity hits me, I drink it in. Also been to California one Christmas, not tropical but a temp diff of 0 - 80 overnight. Fantastic. Went from shivering under a blanket to jogging on the beach in a 12 hour span. Went to Aruba on our honeymoon in April, not winter but still a big temp change from Michigan. It was blazing hot and I enjoyed every minute.

But I may not be typical- I’ve always tolerated warm weather better than cold, even though I’m a lifelong Michigander.

It gets to my Wife that’s for sure. Still she loves it coming from a very snowy cold climate.

I got heat rash on my arms last time I was in Mexico. But it wasn’t a big deal.

It depends on what temperatures you’re comfortable in. I tolerate the cold with excessive amounts of bitching applied but I love the heat in all it’s forms so for me it’s not horrible at all.

I am leaving Toronto to head to San Juan next Wednesday. Based on current temps it will be a 50+ degree shift in temperature and I cannot wait.

I am much less excited about the temperature change I’ll experience on the 24th when we head home.

[cough]That’s called a tan.[cough cough]

I kid because I know what extremes enipla tolerates for much of the year. I’ve gone from Colorado and Alaska to the tropics and thoroughly enjoyed it. The one exception perhaps is Arizona in July. I don’t care what you are or are not used to, that was the only time I can ever remember the climate being unpleasant to the point of affecting a substantial portion of our activities.

Try the Australian Outback in summer some time, or just most of Australia in summer. At that point Arizona is just a tad warm.
