Came across this article and wanted to share since I hadn’t seen it otherwise mentioned:
Apparently, with the US having a comparatively large supply of Vaccine, and the ongoing political and supply issues in providing for much of Latin America and the Caribbean states, it has become popular for those with the resources to visit the US and secure a vaccination.
I want to be clear, this is NOT a judgement against the practice. I wish we as a nation, especially as we have a number of people who are bound and determined not to get their shots, would be more willing to provide more humanitarian aid. And still, I understand (even if I don’t fully agree) that some people feel that we shouldn’t be so freely giving of what was purchased at taxpayer expense.
Still, this feels like a decent enough compromise, even for a cynical capitalist. I mean they’re coming here, spending money travel, eat, stay, etc. Sure, they’re not paying for the shots themselves, but they’d be helping businesses hurt by COVID. I don’t think it is anywhere close to the BEST option, and it seems excessively economically Darwinistic, but heck, nothing in the last few years has been the best option after all.
