Vaccines, autism and big pharma

Water, huh?

How about dextrose? And amino acids?? Shot directly into the bloodstream of our precious children???!?!?!?

I know you’re poking fun at the antivaxxers, and I grinned…but it got me wondering…*are *any vaccines administered by IV, actually into the bloodstream? I don’t know of any, but I’m not an expert or anything.

(Not that dextrose or amino acids or water would be an issue in the right ratio in an IV, just…exactly how far should I roll my eyes at that statement? I need to know the precise level of ignorance displayed here.)

Vaccines are routinely given intramuscularly or subcutaneously (the only type I’m aware of that might be given intravenously is an antitumor vaccine).

Lots of antivaxers emote about Dread Vaccine Toxins injected into the bloodstreams of children. Aside from there not being actual toxins, the bloodstream meme is meant to suggest an element of Instantaneous Doom (we’re supposed to think vaccine ingredients go right to your heart or brain and cause autism, malignant hyperthermia, genu varum* or any of a zillion other catastrophic ailments.

In case someone thinks I was making it up about the dextrose and amino acids, I got that from a positive online review of an antivax book, submitted by someone who claimed she was a pediatric nurse. It’s chilling to think of an alleged health professional so ignorant and/or devious that they’d present those substances as “toxins”.

*Woody Allen once wrote of a character who died of a genu varum. I enjoyed finding out what that actually is.

I’ve seen anti-vaxxers for dog an cat vaccines (yes, they exist as well) claim that the vaccines contain mercury and formaldehyde. And formaldehyde (according to them) is as dangerous as plutonium and asbestos…

:smack:

Seriously! These people realise they can’t get out of vaccinating if they want to compete on dog and cat shows. They feel that checking the amount of antibodies in the blood of the animal is a perfectly good substitute. Never mind that you just don’t know if that protection is going to last for another year, which you can be fairly certain of if you vaccinate.

My only quibble here is that everything is a toxin.

Yup, in high enough amounts any substance is toxic.

As you know, nothing in a vaccine meets this definition.

Suppose you are the CEO of a firm that makes vaccines. The business is marginally profitable, and you are worried about potential liability issues. So you direct your scientists to study the possible adverse effects of your vaccines. Suppose the research reveals that vaccines are associated with a in increased risk of autism…by about 1%. You report this to the board of directors-they are aghast. Would you:
-stop making the vaccine?
-conceal the results?
-request immunity from liability?
Since none of these things have ahppened, I really doubt the claims of the moronic anti-vaxers.

Wait, that’s not an effective argument. We wouldn’t know if they had concealed the results, and vaccine makers were given immunity from certain kinds of liability.

Thank you.

Every vaccine proponent should have this on a T-shirt, because it beautifully exemplifies the difference between them and anti-vaxxers, a sense of social responsibilities. The post above indicates a complete lack of that concept.

No-one wants anyone’s kids to get Measles. People strongly support vaccination because it protects other people. It’s for the public health. It’s not all about you, it’s about all of “us”.

People promote vaccines for others families and for the society as a whole; that’s why they worry about every child with measles.

Not entirely; there’s also still a large number of people who actually survived one or more of the diseases themselves. I had at least two when I was too young to remember. And families had enough kids that everyone expected to be dealing with at least one sick person throughout the Winter and most of the Spring.
