What’s next? Lord knows Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies are pretty played out, how are we going to create another iconic horror?
I think there’s still plenty of room for more zombie stories. Robots and aliens need more love from Hollywood too. Terminator should have kicked off a wave of robot flicks every bit as big as the vampire wave we’re riding now, but somehow it really didn’t.
Werewolves have never gotten the love that vampires and zombies get. I want some really good werewolf flicks.
Damn right.
As to the OP, we don’t need to create another horror. We just cycle through the ones we already have. Different ones will come into vogue at different times. If you want more mummies or witches, just wait a few years.
Just wait, World War Z (With Brad Pitt, J. Michael Strazinsky, and written by the son of Mel Brooks) will light a fire under zombies, but really, 28 <unit of time> later, Shaun of the Dead, Resident Evil 772 - Milla Breaks a Hip should give you an idea of just how many zombie movies there are.
Yeah, but I want something NEW…something I can use the words ‘gestalt’ and ‘protean’ with. Cthulhu didn’t get his fair shake with HellBoy…course, I guess we could go with
as another possibility.
I’m thinking the next ones up will be angels and mermaids. I’m seeing more and more YA and other novels with angels as the main characters, but I think there will always be a bigger market for vampires and zombies.
I’m all for that, as long as it’s the awesome fantasy sort of angel and not the weird Christian wheel-of-wings sort of angel.
Ditto ditto ditto!
Also poor mummies have always really been the Honorable Mention of the monster world.
One might say they were the Brendan Frasier of the monster world.
(I keed, I LOVE Brendan…in a strictly platonic, no homo, way.)
I’m thinking ghosts and demon possession are getting played out as well - but then again, I’ve been watching paranormal activity and such.
Maybe creature from the lagoon or other such ‘monsters’?
Pod-people / alien body-snatchers need a comeback. There’s opportunity for a genuinely tense and scary story there if it’s handled just so. The perfect body-snatcher movie should make the rational/sane audience feel like a zealous conspiracy theorist.
Plague!
Sentient virus plague!
nanobot plague!
Comeback? It never goes away.
What we need is a new adaptation of something besides Jack Finney’s book The Body Snatchers – which didn’t invent the field, and was in fact a latecomer to it. Robert Heinlein’s The Puppet Masters predates it (and Heinlein apologized for using such an old trope when he submitted it), and the movie they made had too many compromises. It’s time for a faithful, CGI-aided adaptation. Or maybe adapt Eric Frank Russell’s body-snatcher novel Three to Conquer
Either of those would give you a body-snatcher story that was different from and fresher than a retread of Finney’s novel.
Yeah, I meant the concept - not that one book. And I mean an A-list comeback - with a great director, stars, and top shelf effects.
Expect The Host early next year, based on the body-snatching book of the same name by Stephanie Meyer. The novel doesn’t quite do for body-snatchers what Twilight did for vampires (i.e., ruin them completely). But it’ll probably be avoidable.
Still, maybe it’ll rekindle this genre. I love a good body-snatcher tale. The Invasion with Craig and Kidman was pretty fun.
I liked lost girl, stars a succubus. They show all kinds of magical types, and its been re-newed.
CHUDs.
CHUDs all the way down.
A nanobot plague could be the next Blob.
Just plain magic in the real world. Dresden Files should have been a HUGE success.
also wanted to say…
GODZIRRAH!
