Van lifer goes missing on cross country trip with fiancee

What are you talking about?

You think “breathless 24/7 Nancy Grace coverage” is bad is equivalent to “the police should stop investigating murders?”

No. I legitimately believed that I was casting a vote against a fascist, and that was reason enough to drive 2700 miles on a weekend. On general principle.

Well, what do you expect? Since people are not, in fact, equal in their inherent traits, if our goal is equality uber alles, we are eventually going to wind up with Harrison Bergeron-esque measures.

WTF, if we treat these brown people and women the same as the naturally better people, we are all going to be dragged down to their level?

Dash cam recorded the Van Aug 27 at Spread Creek Camping Area. This confirmed by a FBI Denver tweet.

I think this is related to the hitchhiker tip reported earlier. Brian was returning to the van.

At least now there’s a specific area to search for Gabby.

I am a little puzzled. That’s considered a campsite? They just parked next to that gravel road? That doesn’t look like a beautiful spot to hang out.

The van is seen at approximately 1 min 40 sec in the video. There’s no need to watch further unless your interested in the death of the couple’s son.

Hey, a camping spot is a spot to park and rest. It doesn’t always have to be scenic (although scenic is nice). Camp sites vary enormously in quality and amenities.

Yeah campsites themselves are not necessarily scenic. I hiked the Appalachian Trail quite a bit as a teenager and most designated spots I’ve seen are near trails and streams. That seems like a fairly typical campsite to me.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, Cliff’s notes: he murdered her, just gotta find out where the body is and how he did it. They probably got into a fight. He probably roughed her up. She might have threatened to go to the cops. And he probably panicked and thought “I’m gonna shut you up for good.” He’s young, didn’t think of the consequences until after the fact. Then when he realized the consequences, he panicked even more.

I haven’t followed this case closely, but has anyone floated the idea that this could be a staged stunt, intended to rocket their YouTube channel viewership into the stratosphere?

In this scenario, Gabby may have driven back with Brian and dropped off at a local accomplice’s home intending to remain “missing” for a period of time, until the big reveal. But, naively, they didn’t anticipate the trouble they’d be in, until it was too late, and they don’t know how to get out of this situation without severe punishment. It wouldn’t be the first time social media influencers pulled hair-brained stunts in order to increase viewership.

In a way, I hope that this is the case, because it seems one of the few scenarios in which Gabby is still alive. Stupid, but alive.

I’m a little surprised Brian didn’t listen to his attorney. Keep your mouth shut and make the police work hard to build a case. Disappearing just makes him look more guilty.

But, he’s young and dumb. That’s probably what lead to Gabby’s disappearance.

Why do you say that?

Yeah, this is pretty much how it’s playing out. I’m sure he might have had a plan, but in the words of Mike Tyson: Everyone’s gotta plan until they get smashed in the mouth.

The pressure’s getting to him. He’s young. He has no idea how he got into this mess and knows less about how to get out of it. Pressure makes us poor long term planners.

Dispersed camping, or “Boondocking”, which is what most of the van life community does, means camping without services on public land. They aren’t campsites with hookups and picnic tables; it looks like what you see in this video, or often even more remote.

From what I understand, public land really means ‘Walmart Parking Lots.’ They specifically allow for campers and have free wifi

Yes.

From my admittedly highly unscientific polling (a.k.a. reading about this) that theory seems to be #2 on the list, just after “Laundrie killed Petito”.

I mean, yes, Walmart lots (Cracker Barrel is another big one) are certainly used. Mostly by newbies and people on the road from one spot to another. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land in the West is most widely used by full-timers, though.

Back on topic: I definitely think social media stunt is not out of the question.

Would people still be doing “social media stunts” though, I mean Balloon Boy already proved that doesn’t actually work.

Don’t you watch Law and Order?

Once it goes bad, they have “no choice” but to kill her, lest she reveal the deception.

Or at least, that’s how I’d write it.

:joy: Every damn day. Hell, it’s happened on this site.

The need for validation and attention from the internet has only increased, not decreased. When your whole life (and often your income) relies on how many people are paying attention to you and your life, people do all kinds of things to keep the clicks, hearts, likes, and dollars coming.

Sometimes stupid stunts are timeless.

Let’s go less Coen Brothers, more Sam Rami. She told him “you get a week head start and then I’m coming for ya.” OK, that’s maybe less Sam Rami, more Ted Rami.
