Vancouver cut off from rest of Canada by road

That is a crap-ton of rain. I hope that you and yours are OK!

No idea. I just repost photos.

So the rain starts again here tomorrow morning. Any idea on what the next storm will do? Exacerbate, annoy, not much at all?

No idea, but hope you come through okay.

Last I heard it will just be light rain tomorrow, then cloudy and showers for the next few days. Shouldn’t have much of an impact I wouldn’t think (I hope). Things are still pretty wet where I live. Many of the local farms are essentially shallow lakes.

I live just south of Vancouver. The rain was so hard at times that the water completely overwhelmed the gutters and water was just cascading off the roof. Our front walk flooded several times–something that has never happened in the 17 years we have lived here. It was pretty intense. In the past 4 months we have had record breaking (and deadly heat), record breaking rain and flooding, and a very rare tornado…I am feeling very nostalgic for 2019…

For recent rainfall stats for BC, you can go to BC weather by city, select a city, and scroll down to “Historical Weather” at the right. Click on that to see daily totals for the selected city. Abbotsford has some nice big numbers.

On the plus side, hopefully this year won’t be quite so bad in fire season.

In two days between November 13 and 15…

“In the Lower Mainland, the YVR Vancouver Airport received 115 mm of precipitation, West Vancouver received 155 mm, and Vancouver Harbour received 133 mm. Abbotsford got 167 mm, Agassiz got 200 mm, and Hope got 230 mm.

Moving towards the interior, Squamish received 198 mm, Whistler received 115 mm, and the Coquihalla Summit got 229 mm.

Here’s a look at preliminary rainfall records that were set on November 14, 2021:

Abbotsford

Old record: 48.9 mm set in 1998
New record: 100.4 mm

(Etc.), similar new records >2 old records for 48h rainfall, q.v.

And now it’s snowing…

More bad news for Abbotsford. An RV rental place is up in smoke.

BC government asking motorists to restrict fill-ups to 30 litres to prevent province from running out of gas; restricted traffic on highways to essential services while repairs begin; City of Merritt wants to move a river.

The newspaper article I read said they were politely asking people to stick to a 30L (half tank) fill-up without enforcement. Then directly followed this by interviewing two gas station attendants who said they would run out of fuel tomorrow. Canadians are somewhat polite but that juxtaposition made me wonder just how polite…

Three flooded highways were also banned for non-essential trips with a random risk of a $2000 fine. Seems harsh, though I guess you need to dissuade the curious.

FWIW, I fill up twice a week. It takes about 22-24 litres each time, over about 250 miles.

BC is cleaning up, including two guys who rescued a 100 kg sturgeon, carrying it two kilometres, including a couple of portages, to take it from a shallow storm pool back to the deep Fraser River.

Newfoundland & Labrador took the hit from storms and flooding this week, with Premier Furey having to fly to Port aux Basques on the south-west coast of the island, which has also been cut off by the Trans-Canada Highway been broken by flooding.

They can fly cargo in on C-130’s. Similiar to the rescue of Berlin during the 1960’s.

How long will the highways be closed? Removing all that mud will take a lot of heavy construction equipment.

It seems like the bad news just keeps coming.

Given the amount of rain we’re getting right now, I’d expect more closures in the short term. There is an unbelievable amount of water coming down here, and we’ve got at least another several hours of it.

I went into huge debt to get my house in shape for water (re-did the drain tiles, re-roofed, put in paths to the sidewalk) and I’m now very glad I did!

I’m glad someone named this house ‘Hillcrest’ (and that we have a new roof).

I was told once that there are areas of Canada that are frequently impossible to read except by plane during the winter because of all the roads being blocked by snow.
