More precisely the vanilla bean is botanically speaking a fruit.

Why did I look this up? Because of vanilla flavored Tootsie Fruit Rolls. I wondered if that was a misnomer.

I was wondering what makes produce definitively a fruit, and looked it up in Ye Olde Wikipedia. Was surprised to see that many items we think of as vegetables are true fruits. Besides the ones already mentioned above, corn, peas, beans, and sweet pepper are true fruits. Also spices like chiles. The deciding factor is that the fruit is the object through which the plant puts out its seeds.

Botanically speaking, all vegetables are something else. Grain, seed, fruit, root, rhizome, etc.

peppers and tomatoes are biological fruits and culinary vegetables.

vegetable is a culinary term for some edible plants that are not sweet.

fruits are plants with seeds.

More specifically, they are the part of the plant that contains the seeds. Usually.

I once tried saying that chocolate comes from a bean, therefore it counts as eating a vegetable. My mother did not accept that argument.
