It’s not the server that makes “smashie” an issue; it’s that the overwhelming majority of users would scream if we had anything animated on the site.
We’ve tried this a time or two, by design and by accident, and the judgment was swift and loud and not just no, but No, NO, hell no, fuck no, stop it right this minute.
As for “smashie” himself, we met him at the bboy board when we were stranded in cyberspace, during the “Winter of Our Missed Content.” As big believers in copyright, we don’t have the rights to use smashie, and so we have had to limp along without him. If that changes, we’ll let you know, but if we did have him, he couldn’t move, so you probably wouldn’t love him as much just sitting around.
Shoot. And here I was hoping I could just type {color=rainbow]to get rainbow colored text.{/color] Doing every letter individually would be such a pain. Maybe I could write a little program…
Oh, and Tuba, I really liked smashie even with the animation turned off. Just in case you can get past that copyright thingy.
Maybe somebody could create a Dope-unique smashie. And just to add some yang to the yin, plus infuse the whole thing with a nice pop-cultie reference, we could have a “nicey” smiley. Smashie pounds you with a mallet, nicey pats you on the head.
