VCR remote not totally working--power surge?

Got home last night and found a power surge had wiped out all the clocks and answering machine. So I spent some time resetting everything. Later I went to watch a video and found that while I could use the VCR remote to play and rewind, I could not use it to turn the power on or off, plus the menu button didn’t work for setting up recording times. Also, when I have on the cable box, TV and VCR, if the VCR isn’t playing, the TV program is viewable. But that was not the case last night. The picture did not come through the box to the TV. I’m planning on replacing the batteries in the remote tonight to see if that helps. It’s weird that the remote functions partially. Could that be due to the power surge, like part of the outlet is blown? Or do I have a fustigated remote?

Replace the remote batteries. Can’t hurt.

But, try this: unplug the VCR for 5 or 10 minutes.

It’s possible that the VCR’s microprocessor is in some abnormal state, and needs to be reset.

“But, try this: unplug the VCR for 5 or 10 minutes.”

One minute should be enough to reset it. I do this all the time & it works miracles.
