I’ve been getting caught up on this show on Xfinity; I missed it during its first run since I don’t have HBO. I like it, it can be juvenile, but still it’s funny in a mean, nasty, cringe-inducing way. I’ve so far seen through the first two seasons and the first episode of s3.
I have a question about s1 that’s been nagging me - the weird, abruptly dropped plot thread of Selina Meyers’ unexpected pregnancy. One episode ends with her realizing she’s really & truly pregnant and not just late. In the very next episode, Gary tells the staff that Selina had a miscarriage. The staff try to express some (fake) condolences, but she brushes the whole matter off with her “like an extra heavy flow” comment.
When I first saw that, I thought “What the hell was that all about?” Why did they go to the bother of writing in this storyline if they were going to just completely overturn in the first 10 minutes of the next episode?
Then it struck me that perhaps the sudden reversal was completely the point - Selina didn’t have a miscarriage, she had an abortion! I even think it’s plausible that every member of her staff (well, perhaps not Gary) instantly grasped the truth of the matter, but that none of them wanted to broach the topic. (It would be completely in keeping with Selina’s character - given how neurotic she is about her public image - and the staff - seeing how little any of them want to talk about personal problems.)
I did a casual google search for sites like the AV Club for review of the episodes, but none of the reviews I read broach the topic. Everyone just refers to it as a weird story mis-step.
But that isn’t confirmed by the show, nor has it been brought up again since (I’m up to s3, e1), so I’m wondering what other people think? Is it possible that Selina terminated her pregnancy?
