I have Vegemite on my English muffins in the morning. Today a co-worker was curious about it, so I cut off a taste for him. He said it tasted “vitamin-y”, but that it wasn’t bad. (Personally, I love the stuff!)
I was not priveledged to grow up in a place where Vegemite is common. Heck, I never even tried it until about 20 years ago! So I missed out on the commercials. But ya know? This is a catchy little tune.
There probably are places in San Diego that sell it.
I liked Vegemite right off, but I seem to be an exception. Most people around here hate the stuff. (My ex-supervisor said it would “gag a maggot”.) They don’t like the smell (like vitamins). They don’t like the looks (like axle grease). They don’t like the taste (I don’t know why).
Hey, maybe people can post Vegemite recipes? I usually just spread it on English muffins, but…
Vegemite Sandwich
Two slices of white bread
Spread butter on one slice and Vegemite on the other. Put the bread together. (Or as I’ve read elsewhere: butter the bread, dip the knife in the Vegemite, and mix that small amount with the butter. Personally, I like it a bit thicker that that.)
I also like it in Breakfast burritos.
1 large tortilla
Scrambled eggs
Bacon (and/or sausage)
Shredded cheese
Hash-brown potatoes
Salsa
Spread Vegemite on the tortilla under where the eggs will go. Add the rest of the fillings, roll up and eat!
scout1222, if you have a Cost Plus World Market down there, that’s where I generally get my vegemite.
Johnny L.A., some of the Phoenix dopers have had the “privilege” of tasting vegemite at a Dopefest. At the dopefest, there was vegemite, so I ordered some toast and butter at the restaurant we were at and made vegemite toast. (Unfortunately, they only had herb butter, so it masked the taste of the vegemite, but I wanted it to be a gentle introduction to the stuff anyway.)
I had a toast-and-scrambled egg sandwich with Vegemite for breakfast this morning. After Shayna, Spiny Norman and I went out to the cinema we stopped for lunch. I ended up having a chorizo omelet. I asked if they had Vegemite so that I could put it on the English muffin, but they didn’t have any so I had wheat toast with jam.
I finally found a store in my area that sells both vegemite and marmite! But such a markup! I sent a friend to Sydney (Ok, she was going anyway) to pick me up one of those 2 kilo tubs. The last one got used up in under a year.
This morning it was an english muffin with butter, vegemite, summer sausage, hard-boiled egg and 3 year old cheddar, all nicely warmed! YUM!!
