So…if you buy a new STi or EVO, and your VLF is $400, it will become $1200.
Per year.

Are “STi” and “EVO” some Three-Letter Acronyms that I haven’t heard before, or do they refer to a particular make of car?
And why do they have license fees that high to begin with, whatever they are? The article you quoted states the average license fee as being $76 dollars a year before the new increase, which is a far cry from $400.
License fees for new cars are higher than for used cars. So while the average fee might be $76, the fee for a new car will be higher.
I wonder if the governor’s opponents will use this to get more support for their recall effort?
Gotcha, thanks.
Is there even any doubt?
The Subaru Impreza WRX STi and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evoloution, two rice-rockets that make 300 hp and 271 hp respectively.
They’re the latest in-cars with the Fast and the Furious crowd because you don’t have to spend a fortune to rice them out.
And this has…what? to do with those of us outside California?
There IS live outside Cali. I promise.
Ah. Before I got to the bottom of this thread, AsahiJpx, I was thinking “I seriously doubt those of us in California are going to get all that much sympathy from the rest of the country.” We might actually elicit some from people in other countries.
Apparently, the rest of our country feel that we deserve to pay higher everything. Because of where we live. HOW DARE WE BE CALIFORNIANS!!
That said, I think it sucks, too. My car is 5 years old, but I’m going back to paying in VLF what I paid for it when it was new. I might as well get a new car, dammit.
You guys brought it upon yourselves. I didn’t pass your tax laws, and being from a different state didn’t vote for any of your legislators.
So waaaaah.
You’re right. After all, we’re in no more of an economic recession than the rest of the nation. Oh, wait…
And it’s not like we produce ANYTHING the rest of the country uses (you know, tracking systems, vehicles, computer chips). Oh, wait…
It was set to raise years ago but we didn’t do it.
VLF is based on what your car is worth. It’s only part of the car reg.
Well THAT’S good to know, at least. The way the article reads in the Chron, you’d think it was a straight, accross the board hike.
Sympathetic Washingtonian checking in here. We too, had outrageous VLFs. This was before we passed Initiative 695. I leased a 97 Ford Explorer in 1998. VLF was $800.00 friggin’ dollars. The next year I paid $700.00 dollars.
We screamed at our legislators for years about our yearly license renewal costs. They ignored us, so we passed an Initiative to reduce those fees. Now the state, counties and cities are STILL cryin’ about their lack of funds due to the passage of 695.
I’m all for paying my fair share of taxes, but the system Washington used was ridiculous.
Oops, this turned into a slight hijack. My apologies. I was just trying to sympathize with OP. I feel your pain (or at least I did).
The registration for my 1994 Yamaha XJ600 was $84 this year. I’d hate to hate to spend $250 to register a bike that’s worth under $1,000!
Okay, here’s a question: I’m having a 1966 MGB roadster restored. I could not register it because I had to take the rusting hulk to the DMV, as they would not accept just the title a photo of the VIN. When it is restored, should I expect to pay the registration on the amount I paid for it (“three digits”)? Or will the registration be based on the value of the restored vehicle ($15,000 - $20,000)?
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not bashing California. I’ve lived there. And after the outrageous fees I had to pay in Louisiana, I do think this is a bum deal for you. I guess they had to find someplace to make the money they used to make off of the smog fees you used to have to pay to import a car from another state.
It’s just that this isn’t the end of the world. You could, like, buy a non-trendy car.
“The registration for my 1994 Yamaha XJ600 was $84 this year.”
No, you missed what I said, reg. is NOT tripling. The part of the reg. called VLF is…look at your reg, it should itemize it.
Call 'em or see if they have a FAQ on a website - I don’t know how wacky your motor vehicle people are but the only way I ever saw any of them in any state I’d ever lived in (NV, WA, FL, AZ) determine the “value” of a vehicle was with the bluebook.

[sub]i’m not following you from thread to thread, honest - complete coincidence i’d reply both here and in the crotchless baccarat thread[/sub]
Yeah. Le website:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/
Also found this there on the main page:
Field Office Wait Time
Check wait times on the web. Currently 59 offices are posting wait times. More to come.
This seems so wrong when Californians seem hit hard with extra fuel taxes already.
