Venture Brothers: What goes down...

One of my Favorites so far. Packed full of references, and almost everyone gets a quotable line. My favorite was Jefferson Twilight, once again showing how his coolness is balanced by his crippling overspecialization: “It wasn’t Blackulas, but I’m not prepared to rule out caucasian vampires”.
And it ends with a ICBM full of Sh**. Beautiful.

Also, Jonas Venture is looking more and more like a dick, isn’t he? Guess Rusty isn’t so different from him, after all.

When I first saw the guy in the star shirt with the spiky hair, I was like “damn it, how do I know that? It’s a reference to something!” And then Rusty mentioned that he said he was a “firestarter” and I nearly bust a gut laughing.

The final explanation at the end was beautiful.
“Apparently, they also managed to get VH1 Classic down there…”

The kids abandoned in the flashback were identical to the kids at Rusty’s daycamp for Boy Adventurers. A bit of laziness on the animators part, I think. The Shining references were especially funny since I just watched that movie a few days ago.

Is M.U.T.H.E.R. are reference to the ships computer in Alien?

Yeah, someone on another forum I frequent pointed that out as well. I’m guessing it was an animation goof. They’ve had more than their share of them. If you don’t give the animations studios explicit instructions, they’ll go ahead and reuse character models to make it easier.

I also remembered my favorite line:
Hank: There was even talk of French Toast!..but there was none to be had…

“Aww, he wrote a little poem…for his dollies!”

My sad, sad geek moment was when I recognized the Falcon’s shoes on the Jefferson Twilight action figure…before it was mentioned that it was a repainted Falcon doll.

Wow, this one rocked. A mix of Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Wargames! I was actually worried for Dr. Venture when he was riding the ICBM full of BM.

Not bad. I like how we keep seeing more and more of this compound - more like entire freaking complex - that Rusty is utterly clueless about and which is not only completely neglected and run down, but also inhabited by lost employees and others who have never managed to find their way out. Kinda like the “I have manufacturing wing?” bit in the second season.

How do you forget you have a nuclear missile on the grounds of your house?

I’d hazard a guess that she’s a bit of a GLaDOS reference, too.

Not to mention the possible Freudian undertones/foreshadowing; Ol’ Rusty didn’t have a mother in his life, though he had a troubled relationship with his father…who himself had a troublesome relationship with “M.U.T.H.E.R.” (and vindictive and potentially genocidal as she was, she sure seemed eager to talk to Dr. Venture Sr.).

Enlighten me, please. I don’t recall Drew Barymore having spiky hair or wearing a shirt with a star.

It’s from the music video for the song “Firestarter” by the band, Prodigy. If you notice, all of the underground people are wearing costumes from music videos (and Dr.Venture even notices that one guy is dressed as the guy from The Buggles.) It’s explained at the end when he says they also got VH1 Classic on their TV.

The Firestarter guy was absolutely brilliant. I would never have gotten that reference if it wasn’t for Weird Al, either; somehow I’d completely missed the original song and only sought it out to understand one of Al’s videos. I’ve come full geek circle.

Jefferson Twilight was the second best character, though. I’d like to see more done with him.

This one was gold! I love the Order of the Triad, and I’m already down for this week’s shirt. I was holding out for a OotT shirt, and I’m glad I did.

I recognized the prodigy guy as well, but I couldn’t place him. It’s been a long, long time since I saw that music video.

Did anyone spot any other recognizable VH1 outfits?

Oh. I guess I was ill-prepared to appreciate the subtle richness of the pop-culture mother lode they were mining with this episode. My bad.

Still, VB is the best show on TV, anyway. I’ll forgive them for leaving me behind this week.

Thanks for the link to the video, btw. You want to come over and rock me to sleep?

I laughed out loud when these guys showed up.

HA! I didn’t even get that one even though I remember that video. Sweet.

There was someone dressed in David Bowie’s harlequin outfit from Ashes to Ashes.

I seem to recall a brief shot of a guy wearing a red leather jacket and white glove a la Michael Jackson.
