Very difficult classical music identification

Track #4 on The Matrix soundtrack is a song called Clubbed to Death by Rob D. I guess it would certainly be considered a techno/electronica song, but it starts off with a very nice classical “sample” played by violins. It seems like this theme is continued on throughout the song, but that is debatable.

What is this song? Searching through Google, many websites I’ve seen assert that Rob D didn’t sample anything for this song and all the classical bits (including the beautiful piano solo) were recorded or created by him. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t be inclined to disbelieve something I read on the Internet, but it must be a full song because I heard it one time when I went to see some kind of dance performance (and it was playing over the house speakers before the show started).

I’d be impressed if someone could name it for me. I guess it’s extra tough because you have to have the Matrix CD to know what song I’m talking about.

It’s the theme from Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

This CD at Amazon has samples if you want to listen. It’s actually the first 20 seconds of the classical piece too.

(Now I have to wonder who tagged that Matrix track in the CDDB as Heavy D? Never noticed that before.)
