Very High Pings

Whenever I attempt to play Counter-Strike, I get pings of 500-700. This of course is ridiculously high and makes the game unplayable. I’ve used dos to ping individual servers and tried the pcpitstop ping test, all of which show ridiculously high pings. I’ve tried the dos tracert command, which shows several places that have pings in the 1000s, indicating multiple routing errors. What can I do?

I forgot to mention that 1 or 2 of ever 4 pings returns a value under 100, indicating normal ping times.

Get a graphical traceroute program, such as Neotrace. This will give you the IP address and whois info on the node or nodes which return the longest ping times. You can them try to contact their owners and bring the situation to their attention.

good suggestion. I have tried using another computer on my little 3 computer network here, and it gets pings consistently under 100. is there any reason that my computer in particular would be doing this? what kind of settings could affect latency? I have windows XP, the computers are connected to a router which sends the signal to a hub and then to my computer. I just moved back from the dorms, so I don’t know whether any settings from my university’s network may be adversely affecting my computer here.

I fixed the problem. I think my default packet size was way too large. I ran an autofix from the pcpitsop website, and everything is all well now.
