I’m only a bit of the way in, but it’s a fascinating read on a sociological terrain that has only been lightly explored.
Having only read a few pages myself so far, he seems to be talking about schism that is more related to education than anything else. The better educated racists had better tools to make their arguments, and the less educated ones had the tools of slurs and violence.
Maybe I haven’t get in yet far enough, but I’m not even certain that the term “schism” is the right one. It’s not as if all those people examined their goals and the available tools, and then chose different directions.
And that’s perfectly apparent if you hover over the link. Sure, it’s a courtesy we’re supposed to do, but there’s no reason to get mad about it.
