I probably just missed something but… When Johnny is living with Waylon Jennings in a shithole apartment without enough money to pay for the phone, he walks to Junes house and tries to get back together with him. She basically tells him that it he pulls himself together, they can tour again. In the next scene he’s living in a big cabin out in the woods. Where did he get the money?
I haven’t seen the movie in a while, but was there perhaps a “time cut” (for lack of a better word) in there? It was a biopic that covered a number of years in their lives, after all, and sometimes the jumps from one year to another are not always obvious right off.
What I remember about the movie was that in the couple of Waylon (played by his real-life son Shooter) scenes, they made it “smack you in the face” obvious who he was, i. e., he was called by name quite loudly (to my ears) – Hey, WAYLON, what do you think?" or whatever the lines were.

It wasn’t that Cash did have the money to pay the bill, he just was not keeping things in order. When he goes to the bank, the check he was trying to cash was too large of an amount for the bank to cash without a hold. He could have easily afforded a nicer place or to pay the phone, but he was more interested in doing drugs and hanging out.
That’s kinda what I figured.
And, yeah, that Waylon line was a little in your face. There had to be a better way to explain who he was. Perhaps mentioning to June that he was staying with Waylon, or that he would be at Waylon’s house if she wanted to find him.
