Very weird networking problem

Using a d-link 624 router, and a d-link 800ap repeater my new imac g5 will connect with the internet when in the same room as the router. When I try to use the repeater from a distance it will no longer connect to the internet. However, I have good signal strength and can access the router by directly typing the IP address. To me that implies that the repeater is not a problem, and yet, when I move the mac into the same room as the router, it does indeed work. What could possibly be causing such a problem?

maybe your neighbor has a wireless access point at the same frequency. Turn off your transmitters and check the signal strength.

I agree with jsleek. You should look for potential sources of interference, including cordless phones operating in the 2.4 GHz range, microwave ovens, and neighboring wireless networks. Also, you can try changing your base station’s channel to 1, 6, or 11, picking one you aren’t using now. Most vendors, IME, set their products to a default channel of 6, so if you have a WiFi-equipped neighbor who didn’t alter his settings they are probably broadcasting on 6. The other channels overlap with their neighbors (i.e. 3 overlaps with 2 and 4). Avoid those unless you can positively determine no one else is using them. You’ll need passive sniffing hardware and software for that.

We really don’t have any neighbors. The microwave oven was not running. All our cordless phones are 900 Mhz because they are cheaper and offer no advantage over the 2.4 ghz. After fiddling with it for hours, it suddenly began to pick up the network and now connects although I have to reconnect after it wakes up from hibernation. This latter problem, however, seems pretty widespread with Mac’s. And how come Macs don’t have scroll wheels?
