Vice President-Military role?

Does the Vice President have an official title in the military, like the President does as Commander in Chief?

In the Military, who are directly under the President? The respective secretaries of the armed forces?

The Vice President has no role in the military, unless he assumes command because the President is dead or otherwise incapacitated.

I believe that the Official Big Boss of the military is the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Joint Chiefs are the heads of each armed force and report to the Secretary of Defense who reports to the President.

Officially, the Vice President’s duty is to twiddle his thumbs and play golf until

  1. the president has to be in two important places at once. That’s when the VP goes to the second place,

  2. The president becomes incapacitated or gets killed. That’s when the VP takes over as prez, until the original president recovers or rises rom the grave (that will be interesting!!)

  3. There is a 50-50 tie in a Senate vote. He goes to the Senate floor and breaks the tie-breaking vote. Also, as president of the Senate, he can gavel in a sessions of the Senate as much as he wants. Too bad it usually done in the absence of the Majority Leader of the same party, or when he counts the Electoral College votes of the next election.

  4. What else? Oh yes, he makes sure that he doesn’t book the same flight or charter the same transportation vehicle the president would be in.

  5. Also, a little-known part in the 24th amendment, he gets to declare the president incompentent and can take over the job just like that. If Cheyney is really doing his job, he would have declared Bush incompentent and take the reigns himself a long time ago. Wait a minute, he did that on Inauguration Day.

Cheney, along with Powell and Rumsfeld, comprises Bush’s big three. His title may be VP but he is really minister without portfolio. He’ll be a big part of any military/political effort to eradicate terrorism and extract vengeance for the US’s losses of the past week.

Card carrying commiepinkohippieleftwingbleedingheart liberal (on social issues, anyway) who voted for Gore checking in here, to ask:
Can’t we lay off the cheap partisan shots for a maybe a few more days?

So does the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs report to the Secretary of Defense-who then reports to the President?

You are right as far as the joint chiefs but the official big boss is the President who, although is a civilian does outrank any general or admiral.
