Vicodin Question

I would like to know a way that I can separate the hydrocodone frome the tylenol in vicodin tablets. My doctor is afraid to issue me a triplicate perscription for pure hydrocodone but I know eventually that the tylenol consumption is bad for my liver. Can anyone please help? Thank you.

I doubt if there’s a reliable way to do that which doesn’t involve a lot of expensive equipment. You’re right to be concerned about triple doses of vicodin, which equal 1500 mg of tylenol. But if a standard dose of vicodin isn’t getting it pain controlwise you need a stronger drug, not triple doses,

I thought Tylenol only caused liver damage if you drank excessively (or chased the Tylenol with a few shots)

No. I’m sure alcohol speeds up the damage but Tylenol in large doses over a period of time does damage your liver.

A large single dose of tylenol (lrger than 1500 mg) can cause liver failure, tylenol overdoses are taken very serioulsy in the hospital,

As if he could really issue a prescription for pure codeine. I’ve never seen it available.
Tylenol is bad for your liver?
I’m laughing at this, how bad is straight codeine then? You’re willing to find out?
Purely in the interest of science, of course.
And you’ll extract it yourself if only told the quick and simple method for doing so?

Why not just admit that tylenol with codeine ain’t good enough anymore, and move right on up to heroin?
Must be the tylenol that’s dangerous though.
Couldn’t be the opiate.
Noooooo, no one ever seeks those, and in more and more concentrated forms.

You want opiates?
Grow your own poppies, or suffer without like the rest of us.

hydrocodone and codeine are two different (albiet related) thingies

Incidentally, opiates really aren’t very toxic. My wonderful drug book mentions the dangers of heavy doses of acetaminphen for liver damage (esp in connection with alcohol abuse), but for opiates, the only cronic danger noted is the high potential for addiction. Of course there is the acute danger of death by OD of opiates, but we all know that, right?

Wow, web based drug chemistry. I wouldn’t take someone’s word for how-to drug chemical seperation on a web board.

Next time ask for a Rx for some Percs.

Oh, quit pussyfooting! Go straight for the demerol.

Thank you all for your help. I will now kill myself so there is no longer any need to add to this thread. Unless it is for your amusement only.

Percocet has tylenol in it too. Percodan has aspirin instead, but I haven’t seen in many years.

my posts were not intended to make fun of you. It would be better to move up the latter of analgesics than to mess with the composition of an existing one. If your doctor won’t do that, ask why, they may have a good reason, if not seek another doctor. There are pain control specialists that can help. Of course if you are drug seeking, they’ll be quick to spot it, good luck

I just put in a fence. My neighbors on the other side were really nuts about it, screaming F*** You f*** F*** for 10 minutes and half hour later more of the same.

claimed that it effects the Feng Shui. So I went on the net, checked, and hey, I made it right on my PROSPERITY line. I won’t be needing any drugs for a long time.

A few comments -

Tylenol doses of over 3250 mg/day (= to 10 regular or 6-7 extra-strength tablets/gelcaps) are not recommended, because toxic intermediate breakdown products build up faster than the liver can clear them. Alcohol usually increases the rate of drug clearance, but in the case of tylenol, only accelerates the early steps, leading to even higher levels of the toxic intermediate products.

This is the recommendation for unsupervised, over-the-counter use. Your doctor may feel it is OK for you to take more than this, as long as (s)he is monitoring liver enzyme levels in your blood to ensure that if any liver irritation should occur, it is detected at an early stage so that the excess tylenol can be stopped & the liver allowed to recover with no permanant damage.

OTOH, your doctor may feel that you are becoming too dependent on the Vicodin. I don’t know why you are taking it, but Vicodin is best used for short-term (less than 2 weeks) pain relief. If taken longer than that, most patients find that tolerance develops - they must take more of the pain medicine to achieve the same level of pain relief. Vicodin also has some abuse potential in that it does create a mild (relative to heroin) high/euphoria.

I may well be reading more into your posts than is true, but I suspect that you & your doctor are at odds about how best to manage your pain, and that (s)he feels you are asking for more Vicodin for a longer period of time than (s)he feels comfortable prescribing. While it is true, as other posters have suggested, that there are stronger narcotic pain medicines than Vicodin, narcotics are generally not the best solution to chronic pain conditions.

I would recommend that you ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist who can help you for your particular condition (Neurologist for headaches, physcial medicine for back pain, pain clinic (multi-specialty clinic for mananging all kinds of chronic pain). Some patients with chronic pain find that non-traditional modalities (acupuncture, chiropracty, hypnotherapy) more effective than what traditional medicine has to offer.

I hope you are able to find a good long-term solution; & am sorry I missed this thread before this. I also apologize in advance if I am making incorrect assumptions about your situation.

[li]Yes, tylenol is bad for your liver.[/li][li]As far as i know, hydrocodone doesn’t destroy your liver.[/li][/ul]

I’d rather take something where the only risk is addiction, rather than liver destruction.

Naeemah Zakiya, I have deleted your link because it was to a site that appears to promote illegal drug use. Do not post such links again.

I don’t see a good reason to leave this thread open, so I’ll go ahead and close it up.
