Video all aircraft at major airports?

I was watching this video and remembered the recent 777 crash. I wonder, how difficult would it be to set cameras up so they record each aircraft as they take off and land? And how useful it would be?

Aside from the very rare crash or emergency landing, I’m thinking it would be useful in training.

How so?

There’s no paucity of telemetry information for the recent 777 crash or any other modern aircraft crash, really. The video frankly won’t give you much valuable information that you don’t already know. You’ll see a plane on final approach with engines that don’t respond to commands for more power. What new and useful information will that provide you?

Duh! A really cool Youtube video of course.

You are correct of course.

Not really an answer to your question, but;

Back in the 70’s a few airlines (American Airlines at least) used to film take offs and landings and broadcast them to the passengers on the planes through closed circuit television. I presume the practice stopped shortly after the crash of AA Flight 191…

The Jet-Blue plane from a few years ago, that had to conduct an emergency landing due to the nose gear being twisted 90-degrees out of position; they were able to watch the story develop on the news on the in-flight entertainment systems. The pilot (or flight attendants, whoever is in charge of that) turned it off for the actual landing, though. I don’t know how much the video footage from the news channels could have helped the investigators figure out what happened (though that was a “known” issue with landing gear on that version of the Airbus).

As I said, not an answer to your question, but two interesting little video-related facts!
