Has any one used Nvidia video cards?
And which manufacture did you pick(MSI, Jaton, Gainward, Etc.)?
I currently use a Chaintech Geforce4 Ti 4600 in my main machine, and a PNY Geforce2 MX in my other computer. They have worked wonderfully so far, with no problems in any of the games that I have played, or any other driver issues.
If you plan on buying a video card right now I would reccomend getting the 128MB Geforce4 Ti4200, for about $120, or going with the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro for ~$200. I would stay away from the GeforceFX 5200(low end) and 5800s(high end), as the ATI cards in that price range offer better performance. The GeforceFX 5600 is being revised, so I would wait a little before purchasing, to get the better card. If you want the top of the line card, I reccomend waiting just a bit for the GeforceFX 5900; it easly beats the Radeon 9800 Pro, http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1821&p=22
I think my GeForce 4 Ti4400 is an Xstasy, but I can’t recall for sure…
Is this a poll or what?
I used a Guillemot GeForce 256 until not too long ago. I’m currently using an Asus GForce 4 Ti4200 I got from Newegg. Love em, they’re great. Stay away from the MX versions is what I’ve heard.
I have a GForce 4MX Ti (or something) in my G4 Tower.
I like it so much a bought a GForce 4 something or another for my ex-XP box. Doesn’t work with DirectX 9, though, and never will. You may want to double-check that the card you want DOES work. ATI’s are known to work, I’ve read.
I’ve owned an asus ti4200 128mb and an asus gf 2 mx (400). Both have been quality cards.
If you get a 4200 card, I’d go asus if I were you. Most manufacturers use a smaller, cheaper PCB for their 4200s, but asus uses a full 4600 PCB. It makes them better at overclocking.
What’s a good card for under $100? I need to upgrade but I’m on a tight budget.
Do not confuse doesn’t work with doesn’t support all the DX9 features.
GF4 cards work with DX9 just fine.
Yeah, I should definitely have been more clear. The card functions as a video card in the computer just fine. But not all features of the non-industry-standard DirectX 9 work. Hence, most games that require DirectX 9 for some strange reason just won’t run. Honestly, though, that’s not a major problem for me in particular, since my Mac is my gaming machine (and the PeeCee is now a Linux box mostly).
Here’s a good comparison of the latest cards.
Phage,
There are many manufactures that use Nvidia and GeForce technology. I am trying to determine what manufactures are good. Is ASUS the only good manufacture?
I’m not aware of a brand based on the nVidia reference chip that’s crap. They’re all pretty much the same–some skimping on extras like packaged games or extra connectors to save money–but all decent quality.
If I were looking at sub $100 video cards, I’d be looking towards ATI rather than nVidia cards. It’s my opinion that you get more bang for your buck with ATI. Try pricing a 128mb ATI Radeon 8500. That’s a pretty nice card coming in at under $100, I believe.
My Dell came with one. Also from tech bargains today for those who have them:
“nVidia has version 44.03 drivers for download. Geforce FX cards benefit from higher performance. XFX”
Geforce FX 5200 64MB AGP videocards have hit a low of $67."
First of all, take Tom’s Hardware reviews with a grain of salt. He tends to favor whoever has been giving him nice shiny things lately.
Secondly, I haven’t heard of any game that requires DX 9 hardware yet, through most of the new ones require the DX 9 software upgrade; every game I know of will run not too badly on DX 7 hardware like Geforce 4 MX cards, and only a couple games will use even the DX 8 special features. My DX 8 Geforce 4 Ti 4600 will run every game out there very nicely, and even runs the Doom3 alpha that got leaked awhile back not too badly.
Thirdly ** cletus ** for a good card under $100 dollars I would have reccomended a Radeon 9000 Pro or Radeon 8500/9100 just a couple days ago, but Nvidia has done their driver magic yet a again and the GeforceFX 5200 http://www.tech-report.com/etc/2003q2/detonator-fx/index.x?pg=1
becomes a lot more competative with the new drivers. The 128MB version comes in at $83 at www.newegg.com. The GeforceFX 5200 is also a DX 9 card, but by the time any games that actually use DX 9 come out, it will probably be too slow to run them very well.
handy,
But what manufactures of video cards do you recommend(ASUS, MSI, Jaton, Gainward, PNY)?
I’m gonna say the manufacturer doesn’t really matter that much, it’s the chipset (GeForce, ATI, etc.) that matters.
You can probably get a Geforce4 Ti4200 64MB card off ebay for ~$100. I got mine for ~$120, and that was months ago. Can’t remember the manufacturer though. PNY sticks in my head, as does Chaintech.
Newegg has a couple of GeForce T1 4200 64MB for 107$. The Chaintech has free shipping. Newegg is a great place to buy computer stuff from. Speedy delivery and an excellent RMA process ( I just returned my wife’s GF Ti4200 128MB Asus and we had it back in about a week and a half).
I’m going with “poll.”
