Quite often when driving around here we’ll see the tape from inside a cassette or video stretched out along the weeds or fencerows. It happens enough that it doesn’t seem to be accidental, but I may be missing something obvious.
I guess I have two questions: Does this happen often anywhere else and why does it happen at all?
I’ve seen it plenty of times. If you’ll allow for a WAG - my ex-husband has gotten pissed off at tapes that were eaten by the player a few times, and tossed the things out the window. I imagine the impact breaks them apart pretty easily, then all the innards go blowing about until they find something to snag up against.
You think there’s a lot of cassette and VHS tapes on the road? You should have been around for the days of the 8-track. Those things jammed if you just looked at them, and people would chuck them out of the car with amazing frequency.
The tape itself (more often than not, it’s Mylar) is a good bit strong stronger than the shell, so the shell shatters, and the tape merrily unspools each time a gust of wind from a passing car catches it.
