Wow, thatś pretty amazing. I could use a Skyrim clone, so to speak.
My initial comparison is more Outer Worlds: it’s an RPG with clear Obsidian DNA, but it’s a tighter, shorter, more carefully curatedel experience than Skyrim or Fallout.
This is great in my books, but a lot of people desperately want Oblivion or Bethesda to release the “next” Skyrim, which is to say an RPG that will hold their attention for thousands of hours. So if a new game isn’t that, it’s automatically bad.
Has anyone played Death’s Door? I’m looking for a fun little game for Switch and this seems interesting. I just tried Return to Monkey Island because it seemed like it would be up my GenX alley, but I was totally bored by it
Did you try Lorelei and the Laser Eyes? Not light-hearted like Monkey Island, but extremely good puzzle game, one of the best I’ve every played.
Yes, I did - at your recommendation, if I recall
And I also loved it.
Ah, of course! Hmmm…do you like puzzle or adventure games like that in general?
Well, back in the day I loved the old Sierra games like King’s Quest, and I loved the original Myst. But I’ve been fairly exclusively console gaming for decades, so I haven’t played too many of those types of games recently. And while I never played the original Monkey Island games, it seemed like something I would enjoy, but no dice. Lorelei was stupendous, and I would happily play something like that (though I doubt there is anything else quite like it).
I don’t know, I might just be in a gaming funk. I just finished Super Mario Odyssey which appears to be very highly regarded and I found it pretty “meh” overall, though enjoyable enough to finish.
Yes, it was very much a sequel game; it assumes and requires you to be familiar with the previous games and characters.
The Witness is the equal, if not superior to Lorelei, but man is it different. On consoles, too. Heck, it’s on the Ipad or Iphone, too.
There is No Game - one of the most overlooked games(uh, there is no game) ever. If you have not played it, you need to. Spoiler…there, uh, is a game. :ducks:
There Is No Game is such a fun mind-twister. Find it if you have not played it; make sure it is the full release. I believe a shortened version came out years before.
I think this is it(I don’t remember the “wrong dimension subtitle”)
Cool, thanks for the recommendations!
I’ve been playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure on the Switch a lot lately. Despite not really knowing anything about Hello Kitty other than occasional things from a friend who is a fan, I thought it had a cozy, Animal Crossing like vibe that appealed to me.
It has been fun so far. It’s very cute with a lot of interesting characters and a good amount of things to do. It’s certainly on the easy side, but that’s what I expected and I’m fine with that. Performance on the Switch is iffy at times, as I encounter slowdown and stuttering from time to time, as well as the game crashing on me at one point. Unfortunately this has been common in Switch games, which is why I’m looking forward to the Switch 2.
Also I love that Butters from South Park finally got what he wanted and the game actually became real.
I played a couple more hours and can confirm that the combat is much more entertaining than Skyrim. I was doing a pistol/spellbook combo but swapped the gun out for a unique sword I picked up in a quest.
The spellbooks are cool. You equip them as a weapon and they give you access to a suite of spells. You can then learn individual spells as you level your character so that you can cast them even if you don’t have the book equipped.
Since there has been a few mentions of Skyrim, I should mention that I am currently playing it in VR.
I’m playing most evenings, though I have mixed feelings. The combat is still bad, although getting stealth shots with the bow is really satisfying as there is no aiming reticle, you genuinely have to skill shot it.
It’s a pain to get set up; it’s not a true VR title really, it’s vanilla skyrim plus VR mods. Right now I’m finding the lighting quite flat, and although there are mods to improve the lighting, my set up is like a house of cards on a jenga tower that I don’t want to touch again.
But…it still holds up pretty well. I found Castle Volkihar last night, and it was pretty awesome seeing it in VR.
Humanity can also be played in VR, and it works well. I haven’t actually bought it yet though, just played through a 30 min trial.
I imagine it’s one of the few games that can actually make good use of VR. The game is great fun, but the camera controls aren’t great (on a normal 2D monitor)… having to rotate the angles around to properly see the dog, especially while jumping, can be quite difficult. It’s better with a controller. Probably great in VR.
Wish GeForce Now supported VR, though I assume any sort of lag would be amplified even more there and cause oodles of vomit.
That’s me. I hate short RPGs. Or if not hate exactly, find them disappointing. Tyranny for example is a great game IMO, with a very interesting magic system. But it is annoyingly short.
I don’t have time to not spend thousands or at least a couple hundred+ hours on a game. I mean…errmm…well…you get my meaning .
The adventure game genre has seen a resurgence since the 90s and 2000s. They’re not exactly the same as the old LucasArts and Sierra games, but often take inspiration from them…
A lot of the actual old LucasArts games (Grim Fandango, Monkey Islands, etc.) have also been re-made for modern PCs/consoles/phones.
Have you already tried the Telltale adventure games? These are quite similar to the adventure games of old: Games Archives - Telltale Games
Or some of the other Annapurna games (they published Lorelei), like What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Gone Home, Stray, etc.? Games - Annapurna Interactive
Or some other titles like Life is Strange, Return of the Obra Dinn, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Beyond a Steel Sky…
There are Myst-like puzzlers too, like The Talos Principle 2, Viewfinder, The Witness, The Room series. Or see this list: https://old.reddit.com/r/myst/comments/ucpru3/list_of_mystlikes/
There is also a newer sub-genre of collaborative (multiplayer coop) escape games, like the Escape Simulator series (PC only) or the We Were Here series or It Takes Two, if you want to play through a Mystlike puzzler together…
Did you already play Planescape: Torment, Disco Elysium, and Citizen Sleeper? All narrative-heavy “choices matter” games that aren’t too short (afaik). They don’t have much in the way of combat / magic, though. For more traditional RPGs like that, there’s of course BG3, the Pathfinder CRPG series, Divinity: Original Sin, etc.
Anyone else playing Kingdom Come Deliverance II? I am really, really enjoying it. The combat system is a bit brutal, but I’m slowly getting better at it, and the fact that you generally get your ass handed to you if you’re outnumbered it realistic enough.
I didn’t play the first one, but from some let’s play videos I surveyed the new one looks more polished and has notably better voice acting.
Citizen Sleeper is pretty short. I’ve got 16 hours on it in Steam, and have already beaten it three times.
Great game, highly recommended, but it’s not a marathon.
Which is more than fine as a personal preference, but the mandate to create games with more and more content has led to a lot of problematic design. Sometimes it’s a potentially good game ruined by a live service mandate (looking at you, Suicide Squad) and sometimes it’s a studio becoming infamous for choking their games with endless side quest clutter (go home, Ubisoft, you’re drunk).
Yep, made it to the second big area before putting it aside for a bit. Very very good game.
Yeah, it’s phenomenal! Everything I wished Skyrim and other open world games would be.
The combat is insanely difficult, so I’ve resorted to thieving and murdering in order to upgrade my gear. Most of the villages are full of dead merchants and wives now, before I’ve even started the first major quest (some wedding). Surprised nobody’s noticed the stench in all the back rooms yet.
Next I just have to figure out a way to rob and murder the bride and groom and maybe I can finally afford to repair all this broken armor…
