Vietnam National Holiday

What is the national holiday in Vietnam?

February 3 - Founding Day of the Communist Party of Vietnam
April 30 - Liberation Day of South Vietnam and Saigon
May 1 - Labor Day
May 19 - Ho Chi Minh’s birthday
May 28 - holiday in commemoration of the birth, the enlightenment and the death of the Buddha
September 3 - Day to commemorate the death of Ho Chi Minh in 1969

National Day is September 2, according to holidayfestival.com (and several other sites – Google for “world holidays”)

Geez! Finding information about Vietnam is so hard! What the heck is the National Flower? I love learning about countries but this one is just so hard!!!

Vietnam may not have a national flower. Of the sites that Google returned (search term: Vietnam “national flower”), I found two non-answers:
http://vietnam.asiannet.com/vietnam_middle_info.htm
http://www.geobop.com/Symbols/plants/flowers/world/

Bear in mind, though, that I have no special knowledge of Vietnam, and am only providing information pulled from the web.

Oh, as for just generally learning about different countries, these are probably two good places to start with (in case you don’t already know about them):[ul][li]CIA World Factbook: The US government’s perspective[/li]Rough Guides (better than Lonely Planet, IMO): The travelers’ perspective[/ul]Meh, maybe that was three places.

There are also holidays that take place according to the lunar calender, such as Asian New Year and Mother’s Day. I know this one occurs sometime between May and October, because I know it’s always really hot when we celebrate it. New Year tends to fall during the end of January or the beginning of February.

Just out of curiosity, why are you asking about Vietnam?

Alex VA’s list looks pretty complete. There’s also March 8, “International Women’s Day”, but that’s not really a national day. I’ll be in Viet Nam in about a week, so I can ask what the national flower is, but I imagine the response will be, “What the hell are you talking about?” (Mot bong hoa quoc gia la cai quai gi?)

Heh, I am qualified to give an acurate answer to this question.

We don’t have a national flower.

OK, so now somebody’s gotta start a thread for nominations for Vietnam’s new national flower.

It’s the Straight Dope Way…

Is Tet still celebrated in Vietnam?

Indeed it is. It’s roughly equivalent to the Chinese new year, which is based on a lunar calendar.
