vietnam

I’m going to be in vietnam for two months this summer. Any tips?

I visited Vietnam a couple of years ago. It is a poor country which suffers much corruption. If you’re there on business you should be aware of the importance of family and government ties. One guide we had openly referred to the army as the mafia. But it’s an interesting an uplifting place to be. Given their history it might be expected that the locals would be wary of foreigners, but this isn’t generally the case. Nor are they deferential - mostly they just treat you like just another person.

Look for humour and wordplay amongst those who wish to practice English with you. The food is truly wonderful (particularly if you like garlic, seafood and pho) and best enjoyed dish by dish in small street joints.
