Views you've never heard expressed anywhere except the SDMB

Well, I don’t want to start a whole MJ tangent, but it just seems so convenient. He just so happens to have white kids and white skin and he’s destroyed surgically any resemblance he might have had to any black person?

I don’t understand this distinction. These people exist in the real world too, and espouse their views to their friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc like anyone else. I personally know examples.

Why do people keep bringing that up? What differnence does it make what color his kids are? Isn’t it convenient that Angelina Jolie has a black kid and her lips just happen to be big? She must have had them inflated.

Most people acknowledge that he has issues with race. Not accepting that he has vitiligo seems bizarre. The man had it.

I have never, ever heard someone in real life claim they had an IQ of over 160, let alone as high as 190. Yet the SDMB seems to be made up entirely of these people.

That it’s acceptable to

pisssssssssssssss

in the shower.

You can count me in for the cell phone thing. You don’t need one, they barely existed ten years ago and everyone got by just fine. Cell phones are VERY NICE but they are not needed. And the damage done is far worse than any use they have.

You don’t need to be in constant contact with anyone.

As for TV, I went about a month without one, when my last TV gave out. I only watch two channels, ME-TV (WWME-CA) which is an oldies station and FOX Sunday Nights.

I could easily get along without one, but I love the old reruns on ME-TV. Without it, I could simply download the shows (not legal) on the Internet.

Now there are certain things I’d have to be convinced of.

Like non-gay male flight attendents. Oh yes, I’ve heard about them, but they all turn out to be the non-gay type of man who still has sex with other men. (Yeah read it slow it’s how they describe themselves :))

Dogs and cats who will starve themselves to death. I’d have to see this to believe it.

Part of my skepticism comes from doing Six Sigma work. As much as I thought it was a waste of money, and I agree it can be a waste, I found out so many things that were simply true of employees and it is shocking.

You don’t think of youself as doing things you do. And the hard thing is you actually BELIEVE it, so it’s hard to convince yourself otherwise.

I am not saying things never exist, but untill I see them myself, I have doubts.

I know, right? I mean…of course it’s undeniably true in my case, but for reasons entirely unrelated to my place of residence and whether or not I own a TV :D.

One assumes you are British. This one really is a cultural divide issue. The Bezerkleyites would be right with you on declawing, but horrified at anyone letting their cats outside.

I know one guy who claimed to have an IQ of 180, he was kind of an idiot. People lived without metal tools 15,000 years ago as well.

Markxxx Need is relative to what is expected of you. I know lots of people, myself included who could not do their jobs without a cell phone.

I’m trying to limit the situation in the OP to “Views you’ve never heard anyone personally known or acquainted to you express, but seem quite common here”.

Thus, if you personally know someone who hates cellphones (or TVs), then that’s fine. But “People commenting about how much they hate cellphones on the comments page of news websites” don’t count, because you personally don’t know those people.

I hear some pretty odd stuff from people at Uni (and I’m hardly Captain Mainstream myself) but some of the stuff that pops up here just leaves it in the dust. There’s obviously a lot of cultural differences at play too (people in the UK are unlikely to know many people who really like firearms the way many in the US do, for example), but even so…

That being late to an event with an agreed on meeting time is not inconsiderate. Or even worth an apology or explanation.

That doing it again, and again isn’t a problem.

That still stuns me about the SDMB.

I have certainly heard people complain about dressing up and cell phone usage outside of the dope. And not just driving while dialing. Just the whole constantly connected thing.

And also not just a monkey suit to a weading. There is very, very little reason to dress up for most jobs. A pair of jeans and tee shirt is best.

Literally, the only people I know who want you to take your shoes off in the house are my son’s friend’s parents.

They’re Japanese. And have tatami mats.

Note: That is me. This is the only place I’ve ever found anyone else who felt that way. Everybody IRL who knows this about me things I’m way cuckoo.

That’s another cultural divinde then. It’s quite common here in Toronto. I’m not going to say that it is the default, but it’s definitely more common than I remember when I was a kid.

Heh. I came here to say kind of the opposite. I’m astonished at the light speed with which people here will immediately drop their friends who are late once too many times. If I did that IRL, I wouldn’t have any friends left.

Well, I’d still have my parents. They’re never late for anything. But that’s probably because they’re 70 and always home.

Until I read it here, I didn’t know “Oriental” is considered offensive in many quarters when used to refer to people. People are Asian, things are Oriental, apparently. Whatever.

Haven’t been able to find it. I’ll look more when I have more time.

I had a thread awhile back about cooking ethnic food in a dorm and was pretty surprised when people jumped all over my shit about it. Essentially the gist was that I should never do anything that might even slightly affect anyone’s olfactory sensibilities. Pretty much everyone I know IRL would think it’s fine and proper on occasion with ventilation, etc.

Michael Jackson’s vitiligo might as well be scientific fact. There are many pictures on the net showing the blotchiness under makeup when he sweat it off during shows, going back to the early 80s.

sigh

OK, I’ll bite: why is it that you want the entire genre to disappear, as opposed to just not wanting to listen to it yourself?

Not just angry, but also kind of sanctimonious about the fact that they never graduated potty training.
