This is me (on rare occasions when fast food is the only option), but I don’t feed the meat to my dog. I don’t eat bread.
Bacon cheddar cheeseburger with mustard and no bun… mmm.

A lot of the things I thought of, people already mentioned; the extreme hatred towards chain restaurants (“I had an appetizer at Applebee’s, and spent the next week projectile vomiting”), people who don’t own televisions outside of those in extreme poverty, and so on.
A few more:
Nobody I know in the real world hates leaf blowers. Here, the folks that don’t like them don’t just find them mildly annoying; they truly despise them.
Fucking leaf blowers. I am so sick of this goddam shit - The BBQ Pit - Straight Dope Message Board

Hardcore foodies that consider eating a sacred act, and choose their friends based on what they eat and the diversity of their diet.
Very overweight and obese women – “real women” – are just as attractive as, if not far attractive than thin and weight-height proportionate women. Yes, there are fat fetishists out there, but I don’t know any in real life. The only men I know who are attracted to fat women are fat men, and they’re also attracted to thin women; they tend to date larger women because they can’t meet a thinner woman where the attraction is mutual. It seems like on the SDMB, a much larger percentage of men hold a much different standard of beauty than the general population. None of my male friends will eyeball a Lane Bryant shopper and go “Wow … she’s sooooo hot. I’ll take her over one of those 12 year old boy-looking women anyday!”
I don’t know anyone here talking about it to that extreme. But I don’t know anyone in real life who would think Applebee’s is good eating. At the very least it’s overpriced. You’d think the common man would hate that.
I’ve never seen that here. I’ve seen a preference among a lot of people for women who aren’t quite so thin as women in Hollywood/fashion models, but I see that on a lot of other Internet places. Places where people go out of their way to compliment plus sized models and say how awesome they are. But I do think you’re right that in general people will talk about how nasty thinner women are on the boards or online, but will ogle them in real life. I’m very tiny and I’ve never been turned down for being too skinny.
Also, I’m seconding the pedophilia acceptance - and I’m not talking about a 15 year old and her 18 year old boyfriend, etc. I’m talking Mary Kay Letorneau shit. Acceptance of any amount of pedophilia is not something I’d EVER encounter IRL, and I live in a mid sized city in the college section of town.
On a side note, kudos to the posters who took the insane posters on it… I couldn’t even bring myself to do so.
Do you mean Cesario? Because was anyone else really saying that it was okay to have sex with kids, or just that someone who admits to being attracted to kids was okay but nothing else? I stopped reading.
ETA: I did think the whole “Rape is a separate issue from pedophilia, child sex isn’t inherently wrong” that Cesario kept putting forth was really disingenuous and pretty damned disgusting.
I think a big issue is that people don’t argue with people with “out there” opinions, and so it looks like the entire board is sitting there nodding in agreement when someone spouts ridiculous nonsense.
Sorry, which board are you talking about? Not this one, clearly.
Heh. What Martini Enfield may have meant (or, if he didn’t, then I’m pointing it out) is that one or two people espousing some goofy position may only draw a half-dozen committed debaters from the other side, out of 5,000 or so active members. So you get a ten-page thread where a quarter of the posters and half the posts support some nutty theory, and that gives the impression that said nutty theory has broader support than it really does. After all, a quarter of the posters in the thread support it, so it’s not a big leap to extrapolate that 1/4 of the SDMB supports it, when in reality, the only supporters are the two or three people in that thread.
And in that vein, I’d offer 9/11 Truthers as an example for the OP. I know they’re all over the web like a plague, but I don’t know any in real life, and the SDMB is the only place I’ve really interacted with them or even seen their arguments in any significant way.
Please. I am begging you for links to all of this vague shit.
A couple of threads I found with quite a few pro-pederasty posts:
A followup: in the real world, I don’t know anyone who isn’t sicked by the thought of pedophilia. In the real world, everybody I know who I’ve discussed this with thinks pederasty is icky even though a few might at first respond to it with jailbait jokes (“Fifteen will get you twenty, har har”, “Old enough to bleed, old enough to breed, har har”, “If there’s grass on the field, it’s time to play ball, har har”).
On the SDMB, regarding pederasty, it’e seen many posts that cited biology or used logic to justify or be apologists for the practice; “Well, human female can get pregnant at 12 or even younger, and many are sexually mature around that time, yadda yadda yadda.” If I’m having a conversation with my peers, and I repeated the things I’ve seen in many SDMB posts about pederasty, I’d be seen as really, really creepy.
Yes- that’s precisely what I mean. Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer… thanks for helping explain it!
I understand this completely. If I were physically more mobile, and able to use public transportation, instead of my car, I’d not have a cellphone. ESPECIALLY since I now have cable internet, and can use both the phone and the net at the same time. I HATE the idea of being at anyone’s beck and call. I can simply not answer my phone, and often don’t, but the idea pisses me off.
Joe
Really? I hate them, and have several IRL friends who do as well.
I love my nieces individually, but in general, I hate kids, and would be very sad if my wife were pregnant. I’d parent well, and be a good dad, but I don’t want to.
Joe
Dogs generally will eventually eat what is put out in front of them. Cats, on the other hand, can literally die from not eating; feline hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver disease can set in very quickly in cats, sometimes even after only a few days, and is quickly-progressing and fatal if not treated by force-feeding (!).
They are the absolute fucking worst. A friend from high school is a Truther and I was getting all these ridiculous Facebook posts in my feed from him about it. And whenever I (or anyone else) would try to call him on it, he’d step back a little, say “I’m just asking questions. The people deserve to know THE TRUTH!” and then act like we’re stomping on his 1st amendmant rights.
He de-friended after I called him on his bullshit too many times.
I stand by what I said: I’ve met people who don’t want to have children, but I never met anyone in real life who hates children.
Yes, but how many people do you in real life do you know, and do you you discuss their like or dislike of children with them?
Here on the Dope, someone can ask a direct question, or discuss subjects that probably would never come up in real life, and hundreds of people may respond. It’s not surprising that some of them may have views that you may not have come across before.
Yeah, and there’s always someone who will leap into a, “Holy shit, my 14 year old niece/family friend/etc. was raped, I’m freaking out” thread, with “Well, she might have consented, lots of girls can consent that young,” and there’s a lot of talk of biology and how we all got married and had sex way younger. I’m never sure why that’s relevant because a LOT of fucked up things happened back then…
Sure. Obviously, there are a lot more people here than I know in real life – certainly more than I know well enough to know their feelings on this matter. I don’t think it’s the least bit surprising there are views expressed on this board that I never encounter in my real life.
However, I’m still answering the question posed by the OP – nobody in real life has said, or indicated to me by their behavior, that they hate children, even the ones that don’t want to have any of their own. We’re talking about my entire family, my wife’s entire family, all my co-workers, all her co-workers, all my friends, all her friends, for starters.
