The next time you get something like that, send it on to me. It sounds hilarious and I’ve never seen anything like 'em.
I’ve never met anyone IRL who had such a scent sensitivity that no amount of any type of cologne could be worn in their presence without them registering visible disgust.
Darn right. I’ve never seen this type of bizarre behavior outside of the SDMB.
I think you all are mistaking people’s stated opinions with their stated actions. I think you are mistaking opinions on an anonymous message board with actions IRL.
–I hate all chemical perfumes. However, I won’t register visible disgust (except to cover my face on the greyhound bus to escape their nasty air ‘freshener’). I’m not rude.
–Similarly, I am disdainful of chain restaurants, but if I’m visiting friends/family in the midwest, where that’s all there is, then of course we’ll be eating there. I don’t berate my friends/family. I will also vote against such places, if there’s a vote, but generally I am friends with people with similar tastes, so it never comes up!
Maybe all the people you know who don’t prefer these things (perfume, chain restaurants) actually hate them, but are too polite to say so in a social setting.
For real? Have you been to the best steakhouses, like Peter Luger’s or Mortons or even Ruth’s Chris? All of those steaks are best eaten medium rare at least; otherwise, you don’t really taste the flavor of the beef. You don’t get the blood and juices that make it a great steak. A lower-end cut of beef at Applebee’s or something, I don’t really care if it’s a little done, because I’m just going to put sauce on it anyway. But a real steak needs to be on the rare side for all the flavor to come out.
I am a single-malt scotch snob, in the sense that I like malt Scotch and can readily taste the difference between Dalwhinnie and Glenmorangie, not to mention Glenmorangie 10 and Glenmorangie 18.
But I don’t sneer at Cutty Sark as bat piss, or suggest that my friends who order Johnny Walker are plebian dolts. And in turn, I can eat Hershey bars without being told that they are pale, insipid imitations of real chocolate. Because I, and pretty much everyone I hang out with, understands that just because they have a trained palate or a sophisticated understanding of a food or drink area does nto mean that those who don’t share that understanding are deficient.
Maybe it’s a matter of what you’re used to. I know from my own childhood that in Eastern European cooking, medium is the least you should expect. Well done is the usual.
I’ve still never had a steak rare in my life. Based on the comments here and on other threads devoted to this topic, maybe I should try it sometime.
IRL, I’d never seen the open contempt for organized religion and its accompanying disregard for reason like I do on the SDMB. This warms my heart, reminding me feel like there are other level-headed people out there. On another level, it saddens me, because there are studies saying that up to 10% of the US population is atheist/agnostic, but only a miniscule percentage of them are “out”.
IRL I’ve never seen such an open contempt for the well-off - defined as upper-middle class or above. People see no problem expressing their populist outrage. I’m not sure what the factors are, but I’d assume one of them is the higher levels of education on the 'dope in liberal arts fields, which often don’t translate into higher-income jobs.
That’s ground beef. A steak is safe.
Wow. I’ve never met anyone who thought that but here. I mean, I know people who like well done steak…just never knew anyone who thought it was all that unusual to like medium steak. You’ve seriously never heard of steak tartare?
If any place says the FDA won’t let them serve rare steak, they are lying. The danger in beef is is E. coli. E. coli comes from contact with fecal matter and does not penetrate the surface of meat. Steak doesn’t have it, and there is no dangerous bacteria inside it. Ground beef has to be cooked through because it has shit in it, and the shit and the E. Coli are all mixed up inside it.
Any restaurant who told you that weren’t allowed to serve rare beef was either talking about hamburger, or possibly liver, or something besides beef, or (for whatever reason) wasn’t telling the truth.
It’s not that he never heard of steak tartare (I boldly speak for BigT) it’s just that most people don’t actually order or eat that in real life, compared to how many people eat it here.
I have never, not once, heard of anyone ordering their steak rare until I met my husband. In my culture*, it is usually cooked through and through. Rare was something rich white folks ordered on tv. I still didn’t realize what rare really meant until this board taught me. What my husband calls rare is really more medium rare. I learned that on this board, too. Also, I should probably be ashamed of this, but I’m not; I thought steak tartare meant some kind of burned, cajun style steak…until I learned better…yep! right here on this board.
*by my culture, I mean the folks I knew growing up.
Both my parents are great cooks but they believe meat has to be cooked damn near to black because of [insert food-borne illness here]. From watching TV chefs, I’ve learned to cook meats (chicken, pork, and beef) at safe temperatures. Which opens up a whole dimension of flavor.
I’ve banished steak sauce from my house, because if you cook a steak correctly (medium to medium rare) you don’t need it!
Back to the OP. I think the cat love on this board is a bit out there. Not that you can’t find it anywhere outside of the SDMB, but I don’t think of this board as being Jean Tisdale-esque until some issue arises about how to treat cats. I’m not a “cat lover” but I don’t dislike them either, so those debates are a little beyond me.
I agree. I have a cat, and I love my cat. But man, some people here really love their cats.
That’s the sort of thing I mean, though- I don’t know anyone IRL who would even vote against going to a chain restaurant because they think the food isn’t up to their high standards or whatever.
I know people who hate certain chain restaurants, who denounce places like Olive Garden and Applebees as shit. These aren’t high-class, elitist people, either. They’re just picky eaters.
ETA: And I find this character trait quite annoying. I’m not a picky eater.
I don’t think it’s a matter of high standards. Just that for what you pay at those places, it really isn’t worth it, and if you’re living in a city that actually has options, why not go to someplace where you can actually get well made or authentic or whatever food?
Cleanser cozies? Damn, I got to get me one of those! My cleanser is always getting cold and clumpy. The googly eyes are a bonus.
Of course, I wouldn’t put Comet Cleanser in it. Comet is for philistines who buy cleanser at Wal-Mart. Some us take the trouble to seek out boutique cleansers, put out by small local cleanseries, that actually get stuff clean.
Really? Everyone you know would vote in favor of going to a chain restaurant over some local place? I guess I find that odd, because no one I know IRL (or, to be fair, no one I know well enough to go out to dinner with) would prefer a chain restaurant. It’s not that we’re all pretentious snobs who think that Olive Garden is dogshit or whatever, it’s just that there’s always some other local place that’s more convenient and has better food. (Or, to be fair again, food we happen to like better.)
Why do always express such shock. When we say we don’t know anyone that would vote for a chain restaurant (or vice versa) we really mean our own little social circle.
Of course Martini’s social circle is going to be different than zut’s. Why do we keep being all amazed that we have different social circles?
