Vin Scully Appreciation Thread

Oh, no. I wasn’t implying any disrespect in not doing it. Quite the contrary. I find it classy that they are letting the Dodger players honor their broadcaster in their own unique way and not trying to get in on it. I can only imagine that the entire building to a person will turn and face the pressbox with thunderous applause as soon as the game is over, regardless of result.

Extra innings. Many prayers answered. Several remaining in SoCal, I bet, but Bonus Vin has to make folks happy.

And Vin gets to call a walk-off home run that clinches the division.

Awesome.

ETA: Vin Scully speech | "Hi everybody, and a very pleasant good evening to you. " #VinScullyDay | By Los Angeles DodgersFacebook

A good speech, what a humble man.

So, Vin Scully’s singing voice is not what I would have imagined. What an incredible (albeit gut-wrenching) game! What a great sendoff for Vin. Good job, Boys In Blue!

Now THAT is the way to send Vin off at home!

Incredible fact about Vin:

Vin Scully started broadcasting in 1950.

Connie Mack was manager of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1950.

Connie Mack was born when Abraham Lincoln was president.
mmm

OK folks, i think we’ve all absorbed the Connie Mack connection now.

What an emotional and bittersweet day. From the tragic news this morning, to the storybook ending at Chavez and everything in between. So glad they pulled off a division win on Vin’s last day. So wish they would have warned me that he was going to sing. I did pretty well up until then, only to have all the emotion come out at once.

I’m really going to miss hearing a baseball game called by one person.

What did he sing? I am hoping it was take me out to the ball game.

“Wind Beneath My Wings”

Damn, I knew I shoulda read the entire thread. :smack:

Wow, some game yesterday with the salutes to Vin, the drama, and the storybook ending. Thanks muchly to everyone for the links to the articles, videos, etc.

I first heard Vin and his partner Jerry Doggett 50 years ago. They complemented each other well, with Jerry being solid and enthusiastic. Maybe like Watson to Holmes, and they were broadcasting together for 32 years, back when Jerry used a slide rule to calculate batting averages while on the air. When I heard them, Jerry would do the 3rd and 7th innings, and Vin the others in the first 9.

One little moment I remember, and of course there is a SABR triple plays list. Looking at Baseball-Reference’s play-by-play for Saturday, June 6, 1970, at Forbes Field: In the top of the 3rd, the Dodgers hit into a triple play. In the bottom of the 3rd the Pirates’s leadoff hitter, Bill Mazeroski, hit a single. Jerry announced, “The Dodgers have set their infield at double-play depth.” From the background, an unmistakeable voice said, “At triple-play depth.” Jerry chuckled and corrected himself.

…and the next hitter, Dock Ellis, also hit a single. Runners at first and second, no out. (The 5 minutes expired while I was editing the previous post.)

Today, a resolution was introduced in Congress to honor Vin. Pretty cool.

A little bit lost in the shuffle, but a contemporary and a legend in his own right, Dick Enberg calls his final Padres game tonight.

Oh my!

John Miller does it when calling SF Giants games on the radio. And yes, he pulls it off.

I was not aware. That’s good to hear. Obviously, as a Dodgers fan, I don’t listen to very many Giants games.

You should listen to this Giants game. It’s a pretty good one. Just saying.
