Virtual reality headsets and watching movies etc

I know nothing about it, never tried it. And I am not a gamer, it seems to me from little “research” I have done that most VR is about that or maybe I am wrong. Hell I know it is being used in healthcare and other areas, but I am interested in home entertainment. Are there VR experiences where I could be on something like Carl Sagan’s Ship of the Imagination? Experiencing it in 3D. For $500 or less

I had an oculus first gen a few years ago. It crapped out on me in less than a year.

At the time I had one, there were not a lot of worlds to explore.

There were some pretty cool haunted houses to explore.

And there was another thing where you could BE a part of a short 20 minute movie.

I enjoyed the concept but the problem is the producers of such movies had a very limited budget. So they couldn’t afford talented actors And the production and set usually sucked.

All said, they are cool. But the novelty wears off fairly quickly.

There is an app called Titans of Space which seems to be along the lines of what you are looking for. Tried it a few years back and it was a decent experience though fairly short.

Oculus TV has a bunch of decent 3d videos which are well worth watching. Some of the David Attenborough nature videos are spectacular. I also liked a series called Tokyo Origami about life in Tokyo.
There are some decent 3d videos on Youtube too.

I’m going to give it a try as cheaply as possible, the one below and I found a refurbished Samsung Galaxy for $45. Although, there might be a better headset, I want one with the easiest navigation of web pages

I saw an app where, instead of sitting in your cubicle, you are on a virtual beach, or spaceship, etc., and you can create and position a bunch of virtual screens around you to do your work (or watch a movie). Not sure how comfortable it is for long periods of time.

I watched a bit of a couple of movies on Amazon and while the screen fills my entire field of vision, which is cool, there is a noticeable loss of resolution compared to HD if the movie was not animated. Would this be different with a more expensive headset?

Just wanted to mention that there are “headsets” into which you slide your phone. The phone provides the video while the headset holds the phone and provides separation and focus.

Unless it is a panoramic movie, that is not cool, though. The screen should take up only 30 degrees or so, not your entire field of vision.

Forgot to mention I went ahead and got a Meta Quest 2
