I just purchased a two-year/one-computer virus protection program (Trend Micro). Installed it on a computer that I’m about to replace. I assume my “rights” to this program will somehow be transferred to my new computer. How does this work?
You’ll need to read the EULA to determine any rights to transference or retention of the license.
Or, probably easier, contact Trend Micro via their website - https://olr.trendmicro.com/registration/us/en-us/troubleticket.aspx
Also, Microsoft Security Essentials is free and very well regarded. I’m running it on 3 different computers and am very happy with it.
We used to use TrendMicro at work. I never had any complaints about it, other than the cost. As for transferring it to another computer, contact TrendMicro. There’s a procedure to transfer the license from one machine to another but I don’t know what it is. It won’t happen automatically.
Now at work we use Microsoft Forefront, which has the annoying habit of periodically making my computer perform like a snail on sedatives. I can’t control when it starts a scan due to our policies at work, but thankfully I can stop the scan once it starts, which I have to do since it renders my computer unusable. Between forefront and the automatic windows updates we are forced to install, I just about can’t use my work computer for work any more. I have to use my personal laptop to actually get anything done. E-mail still works, at least, though even that is faster on my laptop logging in through web based mail instead of outlook.
For free antivirus, I am happy with MSE and Avast. You have to put Avast into silent mode otherwise it attempts to annoy you to death. Other than that, Avast and MSE have been running side by side on two different computers and they’ve both caught and identified the same viruses that were floating around the network. I haven’t seen a reason to recommend one over the other yet.
I used to use AVG but I ditched it when it started getting too bloated and annoying. I don’t know if recent versions are any better or not.
I second this. I have used Trend Micro, AVG and others, but MSE is clean, simple and works jsut fine.
