I just recently switched from McAfee virus protection to Microsoft Security Essentials. I had McAfee for years, and I play a Scrabble game with my family on Java. McAfee has never warned me that Java was a severe threat to my computer, but Microsoft, first thing after I ran a scan, said that Java was a severe threat and that I needed to get rid of it. Has anyone else had this warning?
I run MSE on one of my laptops. It has never flagged java as a problem.
Could they be talking about Chez Moi itself? I’ve been playing it for years with my family in different states, and have never been warned before.
Yeah I kind of have seen the same situation as you after Using Avast forever and then installing MSE briefly when it detected some of Nirsoft’s password recovery tools as potential malware and I knew better.
Might be the same as you I definitely think that MSE is a little more agressive in it’s notifications. Double check the net for the site reputation.
I use MSE, and it has never flagged Java. Perhaps it is detecting an out-of-date version? Older versions of Java are a major vector for malware.
Is it say that Java itself is a virus or perhaps that you have a virus in your Java install? Or a virus that is a Java file? Most viruses I’ve ever had are somehow related to Java but it’s never been Sun’s Java itself.
I would go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all instances of Java that you have. Then let MSSE do a complete scan and clean. And then go to Java.com and install the latest version of Sun’s Java.
Also if your Scrabble app is an app and not being served from a Web page, you can add the path of the app to Exceptions in MSSE under Settings - Excluded Files and Locations.
I went and got the new Java, then ran a full scan, and everything came up clean. Thanks for the help!
