Visa questioned my tipping style!

So, I got a ride to my favorite bar, and my gf was slated to pick me up on her way home. She wound up having to work late, which was fine with me.

A bunch of my friends were there, and I ended up having many beers bought for me. Eventually it was time to leave and I told the bartender I wanted to pay up. She brought me a check for $10. I knew that wasn’t correct, but she showed me a list of my transactions. Many people, including the manager, had bought me drinks.

I gave her my Visa card, she ran it, and I added a $20 tip. I usually don’t tip 200%, but she had taken great care of me and I had no idea how my friends tipped when they bought me drinks.

The next day I get an email from Visa; “Hey, did you mean to tip this much?”

(Yeah, they’re thinking the server might have altered the tip amount, but it made me laugh.)

Who did you go home with?

Heh. Don’t actually remember, but I woke up the next morning in bed beside my gf.

It actually makes good sense that they were suspicious. A 20% tip would have been $2 and could be very easily modified to $20 by adding a zero.

For that sort of tip, the waitress should have been on your other side.

I’m always glad when I get those kind of calls, it means they’re watching out. Though it’s usually Amex that pays that kind of attention.

I find never minds intriguing.

ETA: except for Ambi’s.

That is comforting that they are on top of this stuff.

Given recent tipping scandals over here, I now always (if possible) tip in cash.

Yeah, I tip cash 99% of the time. I was just equal parts drunk, lazy, and tired.

For $20?

It was a classier joint than that.

Not very interesting. I just found after I posted that voltaire had already made the point I was going to make.

And it’s really the point of the thread.
