Here are the American Lung Association’s rankings of most polluted cities for 2013. Los Angeles is worst in ozone, fourth-worst in year-round particle pollution and fourth-worst in short-term particle pollution. San Francisco isn’t on any of the lists.
If there’s 6 people, consider booking a house on AirBNB. There’s a ton of great inventory and it’s likely to be considerably cheaper than a hotel. I’d book early though since you’re arriving during a peak season.

What do we need to take him to? Alkatraz, of course; The Dickens Christmas Faire is a given, as we have friends who work there; what else?

Book, or at least look at booking Alcatraznow. Perhaps not so much in December, but during tourist season, the Alcatraz trips book up and sell out quickly.
I don’t know who you know at Dickens, but let them know that nary a day goes by that Mr. Potts from Cuthbert’s Tea Shoppe and Ralph Nickelby both think fondly of their days in London and do hope to return some day.
I can’t get it to load properly (they over-reach, methinks), but here is CBS channel 5 traffic cams -
You have to book about a month in advance, but do the night time tour of Alcatraz. It’s absolutely awesome. It’s not really more expensive and you get a tour guide and are able to see stuff that’s not on the ordinary, self-guided tour.
Plus you get to see the city lit up at night from the Bay.
