Viva Las Vegas

Yes the Vegas is for Families campaign died off just a year or so after it started and they shifted back very quickly into Sin City.

Follow up!

My travel arrangements to and from got mangled by United and Expedia, and now I have to catch the first leg of my return flight at 6:15AM! Decent people should never see the sun rise, is my philosophy, but I’m probably stuck with it. How fast/efficient is the LV Airport? In other words, how much time should I allow to get through security?

Efficient it isn’t. Crowded it is.

Based on a previous thread of yours, stay away from strip clubs!!!

So, should I allow two hours?

Definitely see Penn and Teller. I’m not much of a gambler, but El Hubbo loves blackjack. We went to see P&T, and even he said that it was a lot of fun. He even said, “Most times, I think I’d rather spend the time gambling, but they were great! I’d see them again.”

So, maybe it’s not the greatest review, but it does mean a bit coming from him. Really. It’s a great show.

I would. It will also depend on whether it is a weekend or weekday flight, and how many other conventioneers are heading off at the same time. But there are slots in the airport, and some decent breakfast food, so just stay up all night and don’t worry about setting your alarm for O-Dark-Thirty.

Weekday morning. I should hope that that would be an ‘ebb’ time for airport traffic.

I have flown to and from the Vegas airport literally dozens (maybe even a hundred, all told) times, and even on the busiest days it’s nowhere near two hours. A weekday early morning will almost certainly involve virtually no line at the security checkpoint at all. If you’re at the airport half an hour before your flight, you’ll get on. I like to be safe, so if it were me I’d arrange to be there an hour early.

That would make sense.

I have to say, I’m not very happy with Expedia / United at the rescheduling of flights in this case - I specifically avoided early flights so I could sleep in, but then they bumped things around - plus they got me arriving in LV a lot later than the original itinerary. And to cap it all off, the final flight from Washington back to my initial airport was cancelled, with no replacement - until I called Expedia and told them they couldn’t leave me stranded in D.C., at which point the flight was un-cancelled.

  • Blue Man Group is a good show. I’ve been twice.
  • The Beatles/Cirqe du Soleil show “Love” was great, too.
  • Window shopping at the Caesar’s Palace mall is fun. Lots of high end stuff and the mall itself is pretty neat. It’s an indoor mall but the ceiling is painted to look like the sky and there are fountains throughout. The Wofgang Puck’s Asian fusion restaurant there is good for lunch.
  • Fat Burger on the strip and/or In 'N Out Burger are good cheap eats.

I’m driving from Idaho to Florida in March. All I want to do this time through Vegas is see Hoover Dam. Maybe I’ll go see Penn & Teller. I really like their TV show.

As always, I’ll get a couple hundred hooker cards from slappers to put in my best friend’s work locker.

I’m a boring eater, and wouldn’t watch Cirque if you paid me to do so. In 'N Out Burger, though, I gotta try.

You’ll have to drive to In 'N Out Burger. It’s right off highway 15 to the west of the strip. I don’t think the way there is very pedestrian friendly, even though you can see all the major casinos from the parking lot.

I hope you like it. My friend is a huge fan - wears their T-shirts and everything.

Update : My flight arrangements nerfed the amount of time I was going to have for doing stuff, so I decided this would be a ‘scout run’ for a later, purely-recreational Vegas trip. But thanks to everyone for their advice! Penn and Teller were fantastic, and I only lost $67 in the casino.

We just got back. While we were there, we had time to play and we saw the BODIES exhibit and the TITANIC exhibit at the Luxor. Outstanding.

For shows, don’t waste your time and money on the Cirque du Soleil - LOVE show. Go see Blue Man Group, Penn & Teller, or Mike Hammer’s comedy magic show instead.

I will second the Cirque/Love show - I saw it while it was still pretty new and they were charging Full Price. The Beatle music was great, but the combination of the music with the “acrobatics” and the little “story” they put together was senseless. I would have gotten much better enjoyment listening to a beatles cd while driving.

Wow really I loved the Cirque/Love show.

I’m buying tickets now for our July trip and I’ve booked Penn & Teller and a day at the Mandalay beach. Thinking one more show pre convention and then I need to figure out what I’m doing while hubby is in seminars and out to dinner with vendors.

I was considering a strip spa tour, but I don’t think I have the patience for that much relaxation.

I read the thread title and thought you were messaging me.
