I have been reading up on the Constitutional Crisis of 1993 that almost became a civil war (involved the shelling of the Russian Duma at the time by the military).
I was wondering however where Vladimir Putin was during the uprising and constitutional crisis, had he entered the “scene” yet or was he still relatively unknown?
Did Putin take a side during 1993 or is he on record taking a side during the constitutional crisis?
IIRC, Putin wasn’t involved with national politics until the late 90s.
I still have a copy of “Inside Putin’s Russia” from a class I took ~10 years ago. I don’t have it here with me, but I can look up a better answer for you when I get home.
According to his personal website at the time he was “assistant to the rector of Leningrad State University in charge of international relations” from 1990-6, no word of his opinion on the unrest at the time though.
According to wiki he got in a bit of a tangle involving understated prices but nevertheless was appointed to other positions in Saint Petersburg. He didn’t move to Moscow until 1996.
