Voice over: how to find work, other questions

Last month, my wife found a classified ad from a company searching for voice talent. She sent in a copy of a voice demo she’d had made some years ago. The production company liked what they heard and used her in their project. She recorded a handful of commercials, one of which was selected by the studio’s client and is now being aired on the radio.

The production company said they were looking forward to working with her again in the future. In the meantime, she’d really like to find other producers that would be interested in using her voice.

(A) Any advice from other voice over actors? Is it worth it to pursue representation or union membership, especially just as she’s getting started?

(B) She’s seeing a lot of ads from companies that just want finished product. What are her options to create recordings on her own? Would she be well served by investing in the equipment it would take for her to do this from home?

Thanks so much for the help!

My one, my only bump.

Even if you don’t have answers to my questions, my wife would love the opportunity to pick the brain of someone who has any experience doing voice over work. If you’d be willing, please send me an email through the link in my profile.

You should check with some local recording studios or radio stations to see if they rent out studio time. This would most certainly be cheaper than buying a load of equipment and setting up her own studio.
