…Hypothetically speaking, of course.
Actually, that Tour Egg doesn’t sound too bad; definitely better than the primitive garbage coming out of Detroit. If I had any desire to buy an SUV (which I don’t), and I had 35-50K burning a hole in my pocket…

Whoa, Canyonero!
What a shameful abuse of our limited precious natural hamster resources.
The Cayenne truly baffles me. Who would pay $56,000 for a Cayenne S? I paid $23K for my Subaru Forester, which is better in the snow and has more cargo space.
True, it’s not as fast, but since the price difference leaves me about $33,000, I can always spring for a brand new Ducati ST4S (~$8k) and blow away every other cage on the road.
I could then drop the remaining $25k on a mint 356 speedster, which would get me more tail than some poser in a Cayenne.*
And I’ve seen the Touareg - it’s big. It’s about the size of a Ford Explorer and the commercials definitely try and make it seem smaller. Plus, it looks like it ate a Passat - I’d much rather have a used Vanagon. (Wait, no I wouldn’t, since VWs are overpriced turds).
[sub]*Hypothetically speaking, since I’m happily married and therefore have no need for getting tail. Hi, honey![/sub]
PSsst. The Touareg and the Cayenne are the sister vehicles. The Volkswagen get the big engines and the Cayenne gets a 911-like profile, a fancy badge and a bigger sticker price.
As SUVs go it isn’t bad. Lots of fancy bits but has good design to go along with it.
And I fail to see how issues in sand are a problem. I knew a guy who drove a Hummer in GWI and he complained that it got stuck driving over the dunes. So either he and the reviewer don’t know how to drive their vehices or driving in sand is HARD. Knowing this moron* I’d say it was mostly the former.
- A quote that I remember him saying about 12 years ago was “Yanno, if I could just get dad to pay for my new apartment I could make it on my own.” Make it on his own meant paying for food, a Mustang payment and a crotchrocket payment. These were also fancy newly built apartments he and his GF just moved into.
Yes… and the SDMB is running rather slow these days, isn’t it?
Observe: an average sized British bloke alongside the Cayenne and the Toe Rag.
Surely those are no small cars. MarkofT is right, by the way, in that they are sister cars. So not only does Volkswagen jack their customers by selling them a Passat 4X4 on steroids, they’ll take one step further, and sell it as a “proper” Porsche as well.
People’s car, my ass.
Yeah, I sure miss the original Beetle. It was exciting wondering which one would kill you: shoddy brakes, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
(If you were lucky, you’d just run out of gas in a bad neighborhood because the gauge didn’t work.)
I’m not opposed to SUVs on moral grounds, but I’m always vastly amused to see the highway medians littered with them after every blizzard. The great traction of four-wheel drive seems to dazzle some drivers into forgetting that they still have worse braking than most four wheel vehicles on the road.
High centre of gravity + heavy body = glide, with optional spin, off the road
No, we’ve all agreed that they are not small. JuanitaTech and I were under the impression the Touareg was much smaller than it was because in the commercials they only shoot it from either directly from the front or back, or a little off from the front. Makes it look smaller than it is.
Of course, for a large car see the Chevy Suburban or a Ford Expedition. True monuments to gluttony.

This is undoubtedly true. Moreover, a mod could drive a Cayenne to the pet store in inclement weather, get laid in the parking lot, and then trundle off to the emergency room in time to get Jerry back in the Habitrail before he suffocates.
That’s sooo wrong!. I mean, you didn’t even indicate that Habitrail is a trademarked name.
