Vote on the fate of the Bonds 756 ball

The guy who bought the Barry Bonds #756 home run ball has posted a web site for the public to vote on what he should do with the ball. There are three options:

  1. Send it to the hall of fame
  2. Brand it with an asterisk, then send it to the hall of fame
  3. Shoot it into space

There’s more information on ESPN.

This seems like a fun idea, if you have $750,000 laying around to blow on something like this. Anyone have an opinion on which of the three options is best, or on this voting deal in general?

Branding it with an asterisk just seems silly because they’ll find a way to turn it so that doesn’t show when they display it. Shooting it into space doesn’t really have much in the way of symbolism for me.

The best thing to do would be to hollow it out and deflate it like they do in the anti-steroids campaign commercials I keep seeing on TV. “Not to mention something else that can happy to a guy’s body after steroid use.”

I notice the website does not seem to be verifying IP addresses, which means anyone can vote as many times as they like…over, and over, and over…

Eh, send it to the Hall of Fame…

It sucks that the guy who caught the ball wasn’t a greedy asshole and got rewarded for it by having a ginormous tax liability for it. Seems like there ought to be a way for someone like this to give it away and for the IRS to just waive the whole tax thing.
