I think one main problem with our national elections (i.e. presidential one) is that every state and county has their own system for counting the votes, which means that concentrated national attention cannot really be paid to any given one. If there’s something blatantly whacky going on with Dodge City voting machines, it would take a decent outcry from Dodge City residents for it to really make a dent in the national news media. It’s just so splintered and hard to oversee right now.
It’s probably against the constitution, but why isn’t there a push to have a national standardized system for national elections? That way, even if we did want to use voting machines, we could test and re-test (with testers being from every political party under the sun) the fuck out of the software until everyone was satisfied they were OK.
Is this unworkable somehow?
