Voter Registration/De-Registration in Ohio

At the heart of the case is a fundamental underlying question: Is the right to vote something that you get to exercise without having to engage in more than a very minimal initial activity? That is, do you have some ongoing onus to act in order to retain that right for a given election? Or is the burden entirely upon the state (once you’ve initially registered) to establish that you no longer are qualified to vote in a certain location?

Predictably, the answer to this question is dependent upon how one views the way individual rights work vis à vis the state.

I do too. You are correct in that you get more than just one post card from the election board.

However, if they are purging you from the rolls, that is when you just get the one post card. If you do not realize that that postcard is not just more junk mail, and pitch it out along with the rest, the you show up to vote and find you’ve been purged.

Can you justify putting a burden on the voter for the privilege of having their voice heard in a democracy?
