VP nominees in other elections

I’m 31. Since my birth there have been three two-term presidents, and just two single-term ones. I don’t even remember Carter because Regan was sworn in while I was in preschool. Therefore, my memories of elections are sort of limited.

What I wonder is, do older dopers think that other vice presidential nominees in the past have gotten the attention that Palin has? Specifically attention from the other party and the media. (not that us common rabble don’t contribute greatly, but it’s easier to see how voters feel now that the internet is so ubiquitous) Certainly she’s captured a lot more attention than Biden. I don’t recall this intensity of focus on Edwards, Cheney, Lieberman, Kemp, Gore, Bentsen or Quayle. Heck, I had to look up Kemp and Bentsen to see who the VP noms even were those elections…

So, is this election unusual, or is it a return to form that younger voters just haven’t seen before?

Dan Quayle got a lot of negative attention in 1988. He was a laughingstock and perfect for every late night talk show host to use in their monologue.

There wasn’t much to talk about in 1988, though. Bush had a solid lead and the so-called issues consisted of the Pledge of Allegiance and furloughs for prison inmates.

Didn’t Ferraro get a lot of attention over her taxes. Or was it her husband’s taxes?
