…any other meaningful girl ‘coming of age’ movies?
P.S. I forgot Persepolis!
…any other meaningful girl ‘coming of age’ movies?
P.S. I forgot Persepolis!
I’m not sure if you’re just looking for non-American movies, but if not, the first ones I thought of were:
An Education
White Oleander
Thirteen
Winter’s Bone
Ghost World
Lore
I think these movies are all pretty meaningful.
Also, I’m glad that someone else on here saw Wadjda. That was a very good movie by any standard, but especially for a first-time filmmaker from a company with basically no cinema history. I hope people seek it out in theaters or when it’s released on DVD.
Spirited Away, for sure.

Repeating:
A very well-done movie. Great girl protagonist. John Cusack in an adjunct role.
Mirrormask, maybe? It shares the “fall into magical world to grow up” genre that is exemplified by Wizard of Oz and Labyrinth.
Mirrormask is a great pick, and we watched it some time ago (I forgot to put it on the list).
Great titles here. I’ll add The Secret of Roan Inish.
It’s depressing, but Pan’s Labyrinth would qualify.
Also Osama (it’s not about bin Laden, the lead girl character is named Osama).
Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger
It was kinda cute. I won’t spoil the ending.
